Rebel XT is ok, the 8mp sensor is similiar to that found in the Canon 20D....however the XT is honestly too small and lacks build quality. I would strongly reccomend getting the vertical battery grip that is available for it. Adding that with put you in line with the size of the 1D. Personaly, if you want an entry level dslr, I would go with the existing Rebel or the soon to be released Nikon D50.

Also, if you do end up getting the Rebel or the Rebel XT opt for the all black body...makes you look less like an amateur and more like a prosumer.

If you are really into photography I would suggest the Canon 20D or the Nikon D70.

I shoot on the D70 and love it.

*patiently waits until I can buy my D70s*

I wish Nikon would try to make the features between the camera models a little different. If you look at the D50, D70(s), and D100, there isn't much different between them except startup time, ISO exposure capability, and lens mount.

my budget is about $800 though, and you can find XTs new for that on ebay.

D70s are a little pricey arent they?

not an amature though, been shooting for a while. i had been on a olympus s500 for some time, which is simi SLR but lacks on the normal zoom capabilities.

A D70 can be had in the $800 region used. If you go the Rebel route though, I really would either get the vertical battery grip or the original 300D rebel.

actually it'll still be a bit smaller then the 1D, since the Rebel's body is smaller then the old Rebel or the 20D in actual size. But the grip will give the camera a more solid feel and be much more useful.

I cant imagine using my 10D w/o the grip

D50 is already out.

And I would like a stronger body like the 20d has. But its really not needed. My Rebel has taken some fucking abuse, and still keeps going.

Hmm, wasnt sure if the D50 was out on the market, good to know. The magnesium frame of the 20D is awesome, agreed. I never have been able to stomach the smooth plastic feel of the Rebel...feels cheap for a $700 camera. You are lucky if your rebel has taken abuse well, the cameras are not known for that. Another option I failed to mention, was that you could pickup a used 10D off Ebay.

Rob is correct, the XT is tiny and would definetly need the verticle grip to make it actually feel alittle larger. I shoot with a 20d and grip and I love the way it feels in my hands. My hands are quite small too but im used to it and love it.

A used d70 with kit lens can be had for around 800-850$ and I would probably go that route opposed to the XT and kit lens. Canons kit lens isnt the greatest. Its decent but the Nikkor 17-80 is alot better in terms of build quality and image quality. I wouldnt even look into the d70s only because I think its Nikons way of trying to make more money. Its like 99% identical to the d70 with a .2" larger LCD. Definetly not worth the extra money.

You could always look into a used 10d and pickup a decent lens like the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or the Canon 28-135 IS and that would cose you right around 800, maybe a little more. I just hated the build quality of the rebel when I owned one. It felt like a Fisher Price camera to me.

I have seen some of Marks pictures, they are really good. I really do not think he is just starting out. Not jumping on anyone, I have just seen his pics and he is pretty good.
I was looking to get a start out camera, what would be a good start out, not too pricey camera? I like Nikon and would like to buy that brand but are they all up there price wise? I HAVE SMALL HANDS lol, even for a girl my hands are tiny* So on the grip, go with what feels way too small for you lol.

North Tampa Photo is your best bet to pickup a used D70 locally and possibly make a direct trade. Short of that there is always Ebay.

I am not a fan of North Tampa Photography. Ive been there once without any help at all. I walk in with money ready to spend and get no customer service. Maybe its cause im a kid, but its just unfair how they look at me differently. I went there with $600 read to buy my 70-200f/4L. Stood there for about 15 mins looking at their lens selection and got no help. I wont ever go back there.

I never really got that, and I dont look older either. They are pretty much the only place in town with a great selection of crap. Ritz doesnt cary barely any pro line stuff unless you goto Countryside store.

If you are deciding between the origional rebel (300D) and the new Rebel XT, get the XT. It has a lot of nice improvements over the 300D. Namely, faster startup time, faster autofocus, user selectable autofocus modes, higher resolution, lower noise, slightly better build, etc. The XT is a pretty small camera, but I agree that the battery grip will help. If you are looking for a used camera check out B&H Photo and also keh.com. I highly recommend KEH, they have a great reputation and nice used stuff. Also, if going used, I recommend the 10D. It can be had for less than $800 and is a much better camera than the 300D. I know because I have both.

Good luck

Im gonna have to respectfully DISAGREE on that Mr. Spock. In terms of build quality on the low end digital SLR's that is true, Nikon owns. The D70 is way better built than either of the rebels and it has a much nicer kit lens. But in terms of ergonomics, image quality, and almost everything else Canon Rules!!! Canon used to kick Nikons arse in the lens arena as well. However, Nikon seems to be making a comeback there. Either way, they are all great cameras. Just stay away from Pentax! Ha Ha.

You know that buying a really expensive camera makes you a better photographer. Then, when customers come to check out your work, you don't show it to them. You just talk about all of your really expensive equipment. And lack of creativity.

that's funny, you always hear about people in search of the magic camera, the one with 100 updated features and 22 megapixels. Take a look at Edward Weston/Paul Strand/Man Ray, all from the early 1900s, all amazing photographs, all with what we would consider archaic equipment (film 35mm or view cameras, little more than a pinhole with a lens and groundglass).
