All my life I've played soccer, and danced. I haven't played soccer for years, so my running isn't ANYTHING like what it used to be. So I decide I may start playing again at BAIS. I miss indoor soccer. So I went out for a run this eve when I got home for work. And OMFG did my lower back kill me from the short maybe 1/2 mi to Mile run/walk I took. I had to stop and stretch out allot.
Is it natural for your back to hurt that bad when you get back into it? I know Im out of shape cardio wise. But damn.. my fucking back killed me.
I run in Asics btw, so it really can't be my shoes. Their fairly good shoes.
Opinions ?

have you gained weight in the belly since you used to run? or it could just be muscles you haven't used much in a while were used quite extensively during the run.

Could be. No, I'm not fat upfront. I don't drink so no beer gut. I could stand to shed a pound or two.
I think its just the usage, my back was on fire with in 5 min of running. I wasnt sprinting or anything.. just a steady jog.

My back hasn't hurt from cardio, i go on the elliptical though, so it's obviously not the same. There are some people who run in this forum though, hopefully they can offer more.

check your shoes, perhaps you have high arches but dont have matching shoes and vice versa or your posture was jacked and you werent aware of it (leaning forward etc)

I thought about posture as well while I was running, tried to be consious of it. Could have been. Im going to try to run on my off days. I fucking hate running.. maybe If I just go play soccer again and chase the ball around, my mind will be off of it. Could very well possibly be my shoes.

I think it will just adapt, your doing something your not use to so some muscles might be a pain at first, when I introduce some of the new workouts into my regime at first one particular muscle gives out but after time it dosn't bother me, in my case it would be diffrent workout movements like decline crunches, swimming (shoulders), etc.

running should never hurt your back even if you have never ran before, if it does you're not doing something right unless you have some underlying lower back problem

Hmm.. I dont think I have back problems. Hell I'm 6'2" 240 and breakdance like its no ones business. That would kill me if I had back problems. I think I'm not used to it. Or my back wasn't stretched at all.

First, stretch. Second I played soccer for years myself. Work out your lower back some. Remember those laying bicycles and leg lifts we had to too as soccer players? That does mostly lower back. Remember you use ALOT of core muscles during a run because you have to stand straight up. It should subside after a few days/weeks depending on your condition. Otherwise dont sweat it. Just stretch before and after and youll be good to go. Keep us informed.
I have the same problem... I can't run more than about a mile because my lower back starts killing me... I think it might be a siatic nerve problem for me, though, because pain will shoot down the back of my left leg. sucks. I would say the best way to protect it is to strengthen your hamstrings and core and stretch alot.

umm.. try leaning back a little bit while you run..it might be your posture while your running... i used to have that problem.. but it was bc i wasnt leaning back enough.. and i wasnt breathing right while i was trying to run for a longer distance. also... when your running try not land hard or flat footed.. that might help..
