when doing chest press, curls, or any other exercise whats the difference if u use one single barbell for both arms or 2 dumbbells?

Typically, barbells are used for building mass because you can do more weight. Dumbells are great for toning and building the smaller muscles because it takes MUCH more control to lift cleanly with dumbells. I did this yesterday with chest. I did my 3 sets of barbell press and when I was done I grabbed a pair of 25 lb dumbells and did 3 sets of 10. It was all I could do to make that last set because my arms were flailing all over.

Good info, Dave.

On a long enough timeline, you will get bigger doing DB's just because you hit the supporting muscles, but for mass as quickly as possible, stick to the BB's, you can do much more weight.

When i first started lifting, i did 80% of my workouts with dumbells to build stabilizers. Now that im more progressed i split it about 50/50, depending on the muscle group being worked

Another thing that I like about dumbells is you don't need a spot. If you get in trouble you can just drop them.

but dumbells can be dangerous if you're trying to throw that last set up and they are heavy weight. Like I said, my arms were jelly and the weights were going all over the place, I'd hate to smack myself in the face with one

True..I sometimes need a spot with dumbells just to get that first rep up..

That's true, but if I had to choose one, 150 barbell on my neck or a 75lb dumbell to the face, I'll take the dumbell. :tard:

I guess I was little traumatized. When I first started I was doing incline barbell and I bit off more than I could chew......I BARELY got my last rep up. You're just totally stuck with a barbell....it's much easier to drop a dumbell to the side.

Thanks guys. I been doing chest presses with dumbells lately and was just wondering if I made a wise change/

OK I didnt wanna make a whole new thread for such a little question so, does anybody know how much olympic EZ curl bars weigh (the bars used for preacher curls) and how much tricep bars weigh? Every guide to gym equipment site does not give their wiehgt, neither does sports authority. Unless I missed something?

I believe the EZ Curls are weighted at 25 lbs.. I dont know what tricep bars you're talking about.. I use the EZ bar for skull crushers..

You aint a man till you have to rock 250 off of the bar just to get it off your chest..

I agree, but I don't usually have a spot.......and I don't really like bugging people to spot me.......so I do exercises where I don't need one.......like dumbells etc.

Yeah..but you cheat yourself..you cant really go as heavy as you want/need to without a good spot..

I never have any problems finding a spot, and if somebody asks for one I'd rather help them then have paramedics in there because they dropped the weight on their neck.
