Ive been thinking about purchasing a digi cam. Ive never owned one and Im not too sure of what exactly I want yet. But Ive seen the whole slim fine pix type of cameras and I think I want something meatier with more performance but nothing as expensive as the Nikon D50 ($700's). Im looking to spend about $$3-5 hundered$$, but I want the best that I can get for the money and I want something that is going to last me a good while and does not become obsolete. As for the type of pictures im going to take, Im not too sure yet but I think I will be getting more into photography depending on what I get and what it can do, so the more it can do the better. I also want to know what your camera of choice is and why, and what you recommend as a good camera for anyone getting into digital cameras.

Thank You for your advice

The price of the D50 is nice and you should really consider it. If you are going to get someone into photography, get some decent and you can grow with now. D50 has plenty of megapixels, its easy to use for the beginner and has interchangeable lenses.

When I first started, I bought an Olympus c-4000z, it was a bad ass first camera and it did a lot of stuff most PnS didnt do. But in a short while I sooned discovered what things I liked in a camera and the Olympus was holding me back. What I know now, I woulda paid more then cause I had plenty of cash then to buy a DSLR, but settled with it instead. Here I am now with a DSLR, looking to get a better one.

If you want something for fun, then go with a decent model one. If you plan on getting into it, get something you can grow with and be happy.

i have a $130 4 mega pixel camera, nobody has made fun of any of my pics.

in all honesty, i wouldnt spend alot on it, unless you plan on taking alot of pics or want to make a living with it.

look in my gallery for what you get for cheap, http://www.tamparacing.com/photopost/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/12595

a DSLR if you plan on sticking with photography. It allows for much more expansion as your skill level grows. Any of the Canon or Nikon digital SLR's would make a good choice. Although they are all above your stated budget. If you are looking for a point and shoot camera; I recommend the Fuji Finepix F10. Currently it is unrivaled in its ability to produce clean, almost noise free images. Digital noise has been a big problem with point and shoot digital cameras since their beginning. Fuji seems to have fixed this with the F10.

Just some food for thought,
Mike
