Ok so I dont play poker often. Every once in a while I sit in on a table with 8 or so friends, and I play online when I get in the mood and theres no live game. While I may not be able to compete with decent players, I know enough to talk poker with them. But I recently ran into the term position raise and dont know what it is. A quick search netted me nothing and I figured Id contibute to this new section. So, what is a position raise? And while youre at it what is position poker?

playing your position, seat at the table relative to the blinds, can be advantagous. The best position to be in it on the dealer button, you don't act until averyone has already bet/raised/folded their hands so you can either fold with NO money in the pot or raise and take money from those who would have folded had you been the 2nd or 3rd to act. Also playing your blinds smart, if you want to raise, wait till everyone calls the initial bet since the big and little blind people have the "option" to raise, again after everyone has already called a $1 or whatever it is to play.

You also want to be in a position where you are next to act AFTER an agressive player and BEFORE a loose player. If the agressive player calls 10 bucks you can fold without having any interest in the pot, and you can RAISE before the loose player and most likely he'll call you.

So basically just knowing who/what's before and after you on the table and betting accordingly? Not sure if Im understanding it fully.

Position is a HUGE part in poker. Depending on what cards you are holding who is in the hand, if they have limped, raised or pushed, it all depends on what you're going to do.

I'm trying to find a good write up for you on position because it's just way tooo much to type.

Well what TNathe posted makes sense to me, I just dont think Im grasping the entire concept. Obviously Ive asked about something thats more complex than a sentence long definition .

Like I said position is a HUGE part in poker. I do not think it could be summed up in a sentenance or 20.

You guys are overcomplicating his question.

A position raise is when you act last and you raise when no one else has, most of the time trying to steal the pot.

Well then would a position raise be applicable if you had a strong hand wanted to force the weaker hands out before the flop? Ive done this before I just never knew it had a name.

The phrase "position raise" usually refers to someone only raising because they're "in position" to do so. So, no, i wouldn't refer to that as a position raise, that's a valid raise.

If your in position and have cards you normally wouldnt raise with and you do raise, then that is what we call a position raise. You force others who are in the pot or players who have limped in to make a decision based on your raise.
