I personally don't think it's necessary to have a laptop durning lecture at HCC. (If that's what you were asking?) I think having a tape recorder in class while taking notes is more effective than typing your notes during lecture.

Well I went and got one today. not just for taking notes but every day there is a 40 min break between 2 of my classes and I figured that can be good time to get some work done in the library. my dad wanted my desktop anyways, so this works out good :)

truthfully a laptop isn't necessary. but there will always be those times that you wish you had one with you.

i have only seen one person use one and that was during english class last year. they are not necessary except for research and papers at school. it becomes a pain carrying it all day at school.

I carry mine around. It's helpful in lecture classes that use Powerpoint, because you can just load up the slides (if the professor makes them available) and a much better view.
Also, you can get an external mic, run it into the laptop, and you can record the class.
And if you really hate the class, just load up Quake. :)

I have never seen anyone at HCC using one. At USF people use them in class because of the wireless internet.

I use mine at USF, and you usually see at least one person in each class on a laptop. I always end up surfing the web and ignoring class when I use it, though, so there are downsides .

I went to UF and USF, a laptop is not necessary and a big expense. Unless you're an engineering, IT, or design major there is not enough use to spend that much money. A cheaper alternative, especially since you'll be in a smaller room at HCC as opposed to large university auditorium, is to get a hand held voice activated mini recorder. They run about $30 to $70 depending on the size, quality and recording medium. I would listen to the lectures before exams and that helped out alot.

i have a mini sony vaio....i use it at USF for note taking and to surf when the lecture gets too boring
it was a life saver in the 3.5 hour summer B session classes :)
i actually have one prof this semester who does't allow laptops in class......i got a medical note that says i have permission, and now i can :)
