Basically, I made this thread to see what kind of bands/groups/artists you guys know about that aren't just mixing certain prefabricated sounds to make their own shit these days.

I was talking with a friend of mine in California about writing and exchanging pieces of music to do some experimenting. I'm not against what the new bands that have been coming out in the past 10 years have to offer, but it's always a band that can be described as emo, hardcore, etc. Techno has different subgenres going, and I enjoy most of it, but I still don't hear a lot of people trying to push for something new. About 2 years ago, I heard an independant german musician's record and had to be the oddest sounding thing I'd ever heard, way off beat and I doubt he used any sort of time signature or key signature for that matter. It was mostly electronic with crazy live drum samples... if I can get a hold of it someday from a friend of mine, I'll try to upload it somewhere.

Anywho- name some bands that push for a slightly different sound that can't be easily categorized or lumped in a certain genre. Mars Volta pops up in my head, but I'm sure a lot of people would seat them in an emo/rock category of some sort. Sound Tribe Sector Nine is another, but I have yet to hear as much of their stuff as I'd like to make a real judgement.

Btw: Industrial counts as a genre.... I guess. Their time as a shining new light in music is way past.
