View Full Version : How long have you been playing poker?

Colby and I started playing on PartyPoker in December when we were bored and had nothing to do. We had no CLUE what we were doing but we managed to turn $50 into $250 in one night. After that I started to play here and there still not knowing what the hell I was doing and losing money.
I really started to learn the game I'd say 3-4 months ago. Since then it's been a good ride, trying to make up for lost money in the begining.
So I'm not going to count the first 3-4 months of fuck ups, so I'll say 4 months I've been playing "seriously".
What about you?

about 3 years, some nights more seriously than others... i played usually around 20-30 hours a week while i was at UF, after moving to orlando it dropped off rapidly because i could never find a damn game... and now i'm broke all the fucking time, so it's been hard to get a bankroll going, so i'm just now starting to branch out and discover new games, and really getting big into studying poker theory... i mean hell i've had super system in my room collecting dust for the better part of 2 years and i'm just now starting to read it. anyone looking to improve their game should definitely pick up 8 copies of that book.

Well I did order a couple books but I got around to only reading one because Colby has the other one and I doubt I'll ever see it again.
But heres what I can offer to help you out, save up $50 deposit it into any site that has the penny tables or nickle tables, I know PokerStars does. CAMP until you get monster hands and build up your BankRoll. I know this sounds dumb but this will improve your game(not saying you suck) and also help build a bankroll, slowly but surely.

i've got about 150 waiting in the wings right now, but my asshole bank closed out my checking account for no apparent reason so i have to drive down to tampa to get them to open it the fuck back up. i'm fairly confident in my game, i really don't think there's too many weak spots when it comes to internet poker... gonna stick to playing 1-2 stud and whatever NL hold em tournaments tickle my fancy... start off with some single tables and branch out into mtt when i feel confident enough.

Yea I know what you're saying about MTT's. I've only been playing MTTs for about 2 months now and I've reached a good amount of Final Tables but I still have yet to take down that first. MTTs are rough for many reasons but hopefully it will come to me soon because thats where the money is.

sort of a bandwagoner i guess, never even knew about texas holdem till maybe a year ago, i'd say ive been seriously playing for 8 months now, finally getting a grasp on how to play properly in the last 4 or 5...prior to it, it was just dumbluck i made anything usually.

when i was a kid i would play five card draw and black jack for fun. when i moved to gainesville a little over a year ago i found that hold em, not football, is the "national sport" of uf. i only play occasionally, usually no more than five to ten dollar buy-ins, but i think i'm not bad. i'd like to get into playing online.

Playing online is a lot harder than in person, good luck if you do deposit.
It takes time to get good at playing online.

why do you say that (other than it being harder to read other players)?

Harder to read players.
A lot of players reload when they are tilting which makes it worse. Harder to get up and walk away.

Players are constantly in and out, the game is SOOO much faster, people are MUCH more aggressive (they can be anonymous, which adds to their confidence level big time), and for me, it's just so AVAILABLE, i can play whenever i want, on bad days, that can get expensive.

Honestly play money is the worst way to learn. Everyone will can ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Only thing I can suggest is deposit money into a site that has penny tables and learn by playing with pennies. I know it sounds useless but this will help out so much in the long run.

Eh. I think the low limit bs is just as bad. Just throw some real money down and learn the expensive way, hahaha.

the thing that i didn't understand during my first foray into the world of online poker (the one where i lost nearly 400 dollars inside of a couple of months playing low limit tables) is that the sheer number of hands you'll see in an hour, let alone a good 6 hour session online, absolutely dwarfs that seen in live play. i would get involved in a lot of pots, play very loose and fast, try and steal lots of small pots to be able to afford a hit if i took a bad beat in a big hand (a strategy that always worked for me in live play, but broke me a number of times online) when in reality all you should really be looking for is premium hands... always leave yourself as many outs as possible, and don't draw unnecessarily. you will catch bad beats. LOTS of them. but something to remember is that you're still catching around the same number of beats you would be per certain number of hands if you were playing live... you're just seeing a greatly increased number of hands.

You really have been reading SS, eh?

yeah... i'd been playing pretty much to the T what he suggests in SS in live games before even reading the book... i think my live play is as solid as it can be at this stage in my development as a player, but it just doesn't translate to online without proper perspective.

Not if you camp and only play good hands.
This will teach you how to get reads on players for cheap and learn when to steal. If you fuck up, who cares? It's just pennies after all.

having never played online before, i went to the free tables just to get my bearings and figure out how it works. i'm glad i did and i'll probably hang there for a while, not because i dont' believe you guys but because i have literally no experience with this and i wasn't kidding when i said it's kicking my ass to adjust to such a different way of playing.
