Lou Piniella's rocky tenure in Tampa Bay appears to be over.

Two sources speaking on condition of anonymity told The Tampa Tribune that Piniella will not return as the Devil Rays manager next season.

According to the Tribune, the Devil Rays will buy out the remaining year of Piniella's four-year deal. Piniella will receive $2.2 million of the $4.4 million he was to have received in 2006. The Rays will also pay $1.25 million in salary deferred from Piniella's first season in 2003.

Piniella, 62, will be free to take another managerial job next season, but has hinted he may take the season off, the Tribune reported.

When asked about his future by the Tribune, Piniella said only, "I can't talk about it."

Rumors of Piniella's departure began earlier this season, when the manager confronted the front office in June over the direction of the team. Piniella criticized the new owners of the last-place team for what he perceives as a lack of a commitment to do everything possible to win. The Devil Rays have the lowest payroll in the majors, just under $30 million when the season began.

"When I came here three years ago, we talked about a situation where we wanted to win now and we were interested in winning now," Piniella told reporters in June. "And you know what? With a small payroll we [improved] from 55 [victories] to 63 and then to 70. This was supposed to be a breakout year. The problem is we've got a new ownership group here that's changed the direction of where we're headed."

The Tribune reported that both sides have been negotiating the details of a buyout since mid-June. Piniella's agent, Alan Nero, did not comment on the deal in a voice message he left Wednesday for the Tribune.

"I just wish everybody would leave it alone," Nero told the Tribune. "Just honor his privacy a bit and let him finish the season up the way he wants. ... Any decisions that have been made will be made public at the appropriate time."

can't really blame him. He's worked his ass off to make this organization competitive, and they've done nothing in return. Namoli is fucking up this town's team with HUGE young talent and few veteran leaders. The groundwork has been there for two years and the only thing missing is PITCHING. Unfortunately, Namoli has held such a tight reign on his payroll, and not made trades to improve the team when we have a huge surplus of talent in positional players. A man can only tolerate so much losing when he's used to winning...

They always fire the coachs when the players suck.

no, he wants out, he's not getting fired. He has been in negotiations since june to get them to buy out the last year of his contract, and it appears they are going to grant his wish

The Devil Rays have soo much potential to be a competitive team but the team brass is run by a bunch of retards. They have soo much YOUNG talent and an excellent closer in Baez they just need some starting pitching and they would be competive. If Johnny Gomes played in a major market there would be no question he would be Rookie of the Year. I don't blame for Piniella for leaving, there is only soo much stupidity he can put up with. -KEVIN-

Gomes ahead of Cantu for ROY? Ahead of Robinson Cano (NYY)? He's a stud, sure but outclassed.

Poor guy just wants to win...

Cantu is not in the running becuase he played last year. Gomes does deserve it in my opinion. He leads in home runs, slugging percentage, and another category which i cant remember for rookies and he has far fewer at bats since he came up in the beginning on June.

ah you are right, he had a few too many AB's last year. And after a little more research, Cano has awful defense. Huston Street is in the running also, as is Nick Swisher. Gomes may be the best player out of all of them, but the media hates the Drays...

That whole team is a mess. What a travesty and how reflective it is of the poor ownership when one of the best managers in the game wants out. :nono:

the team is fine, aside from the pitching staff. They are only weak at first base and catcher. They have a huge surplus of talent in the outfield and infield, which could be used (and in fact, in any other organization, would be) for trades to fill the team's weakness's.

The ownership group is nearly like the one from "Major League" - doing everything they can to sink the organization and not spend a dime doing it. However, they are profitable, which is a feat in of itself. If ownership doubled the salary (which would bring it to a whopping 60 million) they could be extremely competitive, even in the stacked AL east. The payoff? This town loves a winner, just look at the Bucs and Lightning. They could possibly sell out that stupid stadium of theirs and make even MORE money.

But Namoli sucks and won't spend a dime

I was gonna say Cano hasn't had the greatest season for defense. Some of his bonehead errors are running through my head right now. Gomes is awesome. I like him alot. As of right now though, Cano is on fire for offense. Gomes plays good defense has a good arm and is very aggressive at the plate. He is an all-around solid player. He still won't win because he plays for the D-RAYS  I like him and Crawford. I can't imagine being the owner of a franchise though and consistently be the laughing stock of the league year after year. I just don't understand. It isn't a lost cause either cause they have a good foundation just need to fill in some holes at certain positions. It is like the owners couldn't give 2 shits if they win or not. I would love to see Crawford come over the to Evil Empire though :-o -KEVIN-
