Its actually a series of islands they are building. From what I understand, the islands will look like the continents so an overhead view will look like a world map. The largest island will be the size of Manhatten. Pretty serious stuff, but then again, all of their money comes from oil which they are screwing everyone on now.
The company I work for is doing the kitchen design for a new resort called the Fairmont Palm. Trump just signed a deal to license his name to a few properties overthere as well.

The ME is in an ideal trade location, situated between booming china and finished good hungry Europe, plus they supply oil to the two nations. It may have alot of desert but all you need are natural resources and people/money will come.
Also, its much easier to develop arid land right now with new technology in irrigation and such. Before it was MUCH harder to turn a piece of desert into an oasis. Israel helped show the world it could be done and now other nations are following suit.
Hopefully this alleviates tensions between arab civilians to the United States.

There might be another one you're talking about that I haven't heard of, but The Palms is a series of 3 man-made peninsulas in the shape of palm trees. You can read up on it here: http://www.palmsales.ca/apartments/index.html

Its confusing because most of that area has the name Palm in it somewhere. I read about it in CNN last week.

That's how oil can help a country's economic status.
