From the little that I've played with the 20D, its awesome. The soon to be sold Nikon D200 is going to be more expensive but probably the closest in price with better performance. Its supposedly in a simliar class to the EOS 5D, which is a good $1200 more.

Agreed the D200 will be inline with the 5D. The 20D is quite simply the best camera for the money on the market right now...but the D200 will be the best camera for the money shortly. $1600-$1700 retail. I plan on upgrading my D70 to the D200 when it becomes available.

"The Nikon D200 was announced on 1st November 2005, some three and a half years since Nikon revealed their first prosumer digital SLR, the D100. It's fair to say however that the D200 is a completely different beast altogether, it shares far more with its 'bigger brother' the the D2X than its earlier namesake. The D200 has the robust build quality of the D2X, a 10.2 million pixel CCD sensor and a compact design more like the D100. Just as the D100 the D200 has a CCD sensor, unlike the D2X which utilized a CMOS sensor. It's clear that this camera is aimed at the same kind of market as the recently announced Canon EOS 5D. From a features, control and performance point of view the D200 is closer to the D2X than any other model."

Besides Aharon and Kirk I personally know 3 other people who have a 20D. No complaints.

20d is a fantastic camera. Never really had a complaint with it.

You should do a little more research on the camera or other cameras and see which one would suite your needs better. Do you need 8mp, do you need 5fps, do you need good high iso performance. Etc.

My thought is nasically I love my eos g and ae1 but when I was looking at the xt i noticed that for only a few hundred more i can get the 20d and since everything on the market is compared to that camera i figured go for it so my wife said she would get it for me for b-day next month

few hundred? l wish it was, more like $500. Im going to get a 20d sometime soon as a second camera myself. I just really want that 1.3x multi-factor and 5 fps.

the xt I looked was close to a grand and 20d was only like 1299 with lens

The 20d is still a 1.6 crop factor

I purchase almost all of my gear used because you dont lose too much resale value. Used 20d bodies are going for around $900 or so on the forums. Ive seen them as cheap as $800! As long as you dont really care about your equipment being slightly used, its not a biggie. I purchase my equipment for what it does, not how it looks. Just some info.

its not overkill, why buy a camera your going to grow out of soon. I worked at CCity and played around with the 20D and some other SLR's and the 20D is definatley an amazing camera, very capable for the price you wont regret it.

u dont need a 20d unless your shooting action or really low lighting all the time

if you just use it from time to time, get the XT, which can be found with the lens for around 750-800 on ebay (where i got mine)

yeah, but if you are already going to drop that much cash i would save up or wait a lil longer till you can get the 20d. Its more capable and you never know when you might wish you had the ability to do some of those types of shots. Also, even if you just want to take general pictures to start, once you get going you might become more involved in photography as a hobby. Either way both are outstanding cameras and the XT is extremely capable as well....just depends on how mcuh you want to to do
