Leslie, you have assumed correct. I have know a lot of people that take these jobs just to get in the door with Verizon only to transfer to better positons when their year is up.

Give me a holler also if any of you folks want to work for Verizon. I work as a tech support rep/customer care associate at the office in downtown Tampa.
Pay is just plain awesome and they give you medical/dental/vision insurance for you and your family at no cost at all (no premiums, nothing, all paid for by company). Tuition reimbursement, etc.
I started at Verizon back in June of 2005 at a rate of $13.99 per hour. I am currently making $17.34 per hour. You get guaranteed raises every 6 months (written in the company's contract), plus I get merit increases, etc. Each raise is like one dollar and some change extra. My position pay level ranges anywhere from like $12 and change per hour to about $22 per hour. Your starting rate depends on your education and experience. If you start out around where I did, you'll be at the top out rate within 1 and a half to 2 years max.
You get company bonuses/gain sharing checks each year also, depending on how well the company does financially for the year.
With the company bonus, vacation time, etc, I'll be close to 40k a year. If you're making the top out rate, you'll be making close to around the $48k a year, including your gainsharing check.
Oh, forgot to mention, the job is pretty laid back. Actually, it's cake. We get way overpaid for what we do in my opinion. During down time, I play my PSP, watch DVD's, read a magazine or a book.
They do promote like crazy. Alot of people in my office end up going out to the field, as they sort of get tired of the office environment and want to be outside. Field techs top out at like $25-26 an hour I believe. Lots of overtime available at times too.

Not that this is really important, but does Verizon give Internet access @ work?
I'm looking for a change. ALLTEL is getting boring...I've been here way too long.

The computers are "internet capable", but I'm assuming you mean for things like surfing on TR or IMing.
The company only lets you surf out to company approved webpages. Unfortunately, they won't let you get on to TR or ESPN, or anything of that nature.
It's all good though, they'll let you talk on your cell phone at your desk when it's slow, watch a DVD, read a book, etc.
I basically play games or watch movies on my PSP to pass the time by or read a magazine or book, or chat with my cubicle buddies. Pretty awesome when you get paid $17+ an hour to sit there and chill or play video games .
Hehe, just found out today that our center was #1 of the 4 centers in the US, so we'll be getting a bonus check worth 7.5% of our salary.
Forgot to mention in my previous post, that if you work Sundays (even within a 40 hour work week), you automatically get time and a half pay, for all hours worked that day (overtime rate without actually working overtime hours).

Okay, let me reiterate my previous post in this thread.
I guess I got so detailed about what I do for the company, I made it seem like we were hiring for my position.
They are not currently hiring for my position. Go to verizon.com/careers, click on the "Search all job openings" hyperlink, and do a search for the Tampa, FL area. (Other areas also include St. Pete, Temple Terrace, Sarasota, and the like. You can select more than one city). If there are any postings that interest you on the page, PM terry.ho, since he originated the thread, but you can use me as a reference too, if you want.
I'll be sure to start a new thread if they open new positions up at my office. Again, as of right now, there are no openings in my office, but there are other positions available (those that terry.ho posted, as well as others on the Verizon website). I know they are still hiring for Fiber Optic Field Techs. They will train you, but you have to pass an electrical test, which is actually kind of hard. Pay is great for the field techs though. Pay rate is anywhere from $11.71 to $23.39 per hour, depending on experience and/or education. The company usually starts you out at least half way up the wage scale, so usually the lowest you would start out it around the $15.00 range or higher per hour. It all really depends on your experience, education, test results, and interview results though.

At the moment, it looks like they took the Field Tech posting down. Rumors circulating though, that they will hire another wave of techs here soon, so keep your eye on verizon.com for the posting in the Tampa Bay region.
Verizon wanting to push FIOs throughout Central Florida as quickly as possible and get everybody off the shitty and outdated copper facilities.

Keep a eye on the postings. At least 440 techs will be hired before June 1. The hiring was set back due to problems with the video portion of fios. Video is now available in Valrico and Dover. Brandon,Riverview, and Lithia will be ready within the next month or so.

Also, to answer your other question Joann, they are currently hiring for call center positions, but it is for the Customer Service/Billing Office, not the technical support center.
Pay rate still tops out at like $19 and some change per hour. There is sales involved. Not sure if they give you a comission check each month or not, but you do get a yearly company bonus, plus whatever you sell, you get points for, which you can use to purchase anything from clothing, electronics, plasma tv's, tools, gift cards, etc.
Even if they do not offer commision checks, the $19 and change hourly rate still makes up for it. Say you were to work in a call center and make $13 an hour, plus bonuses. Most places don't have the bonus potential that will have you earning an extra $6 per hour on top of your regular hourly rate.
Again, I don't know for sure if they do or not though. Go on to verizon.com and apply if the position interests you at all.

will verizon offer any form of relocation as part of their benefits?

So you guys have an address for the center? I'm really interested, but I'd be commuting from springhill (takes me about 30 mins to get to hilsborough for school) and are they a little flexible around a college schedule? All my classes run 8-12 in the morning, and from there I'd already be in tampa.

Probably not, unless it's at least a "mid-level", or "professional level" position.

I don't believe the billing office offers any sort of "night shifts". I know our center has 1-9, 2-10, 3-11 shifts, which usually will work good for most college students (like me), but the billing center's normal hours are 8am-6pm Mon-Fri. I know they work some hours into the evening for overtime, but I don't think they offer any type of night shifts. I'll check into it though, but again, I doubt it.

Hey I just got a call from a recruiter, they want me to come down tomorrow at 2pm for an interview for the Technical Support position, I got a brief image from what you were stating above, I currently work for AOL Technical Support, its a bitch, have to follow the flows, even though I got so good I dont, lol. I was supprised with the starting pay she offered, can I bargin for like an extra 50 cents?
Also my company was going to pay for my course to get my MCDST, does verizon offer anything like that? Sorry this is long, if possible can I give you a call, if so PM #?

Tech Support for phones? Copper or FIOs? I don't believe our office is hiring at the moment, but I could be wrong I suppose.
I don't really think you can negotiate too much. When you say "suprising" as far as the pay rate goes, do you mean as in a "good" thing, or "dissapointing" thing?
Obviously, if you think it's a good starting pay rate, I'd just be happy with that for the time being. They will give you two raises in your first 6 months. One of the raises will be your 6 month raise (you get an automatic raise every 6 months), and the other is a merit increase, as long as you perform well out of training.
