My mother is an avid runner and she's always trying to get me to start...well tonight there is a huge race going on in Ybor. The distance is 5k. And I'm going to do this. Completely untrained. I know, it's a bad idea...but I expect my time to be no less than 45 minutes. I plan on walking/jogging. Anywho, is anyone else going to this?

Damn, if I had known about this earlier, I definitely would have gone along with you. I like doing 5k's, even if I only walk/jog the whole thing. I'm too out of shape to actually run it all, lol.

I won't be running tonight but here are some tips. Before you race make sure youv'e drank atleast 10 glasses of water (8oz) and Id reccomend a banana 30minutes pre-race. Keep a steady breathing pattern and keep your back straight up. If you feel a cramp slow down to a steady jog or a walk and it helps alittle to stretch your sides. If its your first 35-45 minutes sounds about right. Make sure you have a decent pair of shoes, Ybor's streets are notoriously hard and your knees/ankles will let you know how much they hate you.
Best of luck!

Thanks a lot, that should help actually :)
Guado- it's in Ybor and the race begins at 7 pm. We haven't registered but we may when we get there. Otherwise we'll just run for the fun of it... Paying to run is no fun :(

ran it in 35 minutes....and I threw up 3 times. :( It felt good to finish it at all though!
Let's just say that I'm feeling the pain now....it's going to be a rough next couple of days.

My advice is to keep the fluid uptake high, and take one or two really hot baths (not showers) a day. If you have some epsom salt throw some of that into the tub and just let the heat soak for a few minutes.
Also do alot of stretches. You are supposed to do a cooldown lap after running or atleast stretch out but most don't. Congrats on the first marathon though!

I WISH it was a marathon! It was a 5k (3.1 miles). I have a weak stomach (runs in the family) and I drank some really sugary gatorade that the race staff provided. The first time I ran a 5k (several years ago) I threw up three times as well. I definitely pushed myself too hard :(

don't bother with gatorade unless you are running 15km+. Also avoid foods and liquids 30 minutes before the race atleast. The day before you should have carbohydrates like pasta (carb up) to give you a readily available source of energy that isn't just sitting in your digestive track.
Also inhale more through your nose. When you breath through your mouth you have a habit of getting air into your stomach increasing pressure and causing you to throw up. My football coach told us to keep a steady breathing pattern, inhaling deep through your nostrils and exhaling deep through your mouth in a controlled pace. This will put less stress on your stomach and you will more than likely NOT throw up.
Also since you didn't train at all and don't run competitively 35 minutes is not bad at all. Most competition high school female runners for cross country run 3 miles in 21 minutes give or take yet they practice 5-6 times a week. If you kept up with running I think you have alot of potential.
Keep it up Krystle, you did excellent for your first mini-marathon.
NOTE: Marathons are classified as 26 miles, 13 miles is a "half-marathon". Everything else is just called a "race".

Yeah I know that it's called a "race"...I think you had said the word marathon earlier and I wanted to make sure you knew it was only a 5k. I definitely lacked a steady breathing pattern. Wish I would've known that before...I inhaled more through my mouth :(
Thanks for the other tips :) I'm going to start "training" for another one and should be ready to do one under thirty minutes in a couple of months. My mom is an avid runner and she's going to make me a "program" to follow. I'll let you know on my progress :D
