Anyone else buy sections from lowes/home depot etc.. and install the fence yourself? It took me 1 day to get 9 posts up (level, measure, pour concrete) and 2 hrs to get the sections up that you see pictured.. what a damn work out this is.

I worked from the outside towards the inside so I could measure up where to put the gate at.. the sides of the house are going to be even longer and more work than this  This is my first time so I am trying to do everything perfect

Looking good man. I would never have the patience to do it myself. Whats its going to cost you total if you dont mind? Is it saving quite a bit from having somone do it?

I helped put up a fence at my mothers old house around 3 lots. We did not pour concrete though, we just dug the holes and packed them back with the dirt. I hope its going to stay like that for a while because good luck digging up the concrete .

Looks good though.

It was about $1,200 in material, this is without having to run the fence on the west side of the yard since that neighbor already has a fence running down. I saw price quotes for yards same size as mine and the savings are WELL worth it.

James - It should be like this for a very long time otherwise we wouldn't have spent the moolah :) Its VERY easy to dig up the concrete seeing as the holes are 2.6 ft deep, not wide at all, and its only half a bag per post with the exception of the corners/gate posts which use a full bag... the concrete will come up with the post if you dig around the post if it ever needed to be changed. I just want a damn sturdy fence for my yard for when hurricane season comes.

Kirk why are you blocking your conservation view with that big ass fence?

I was kneeling to take the pictures, you can see right over the fence from my house because it is fairly down the slope. If we would have gone with a 4ft fence it would have been too low to keep the tall dog from jumping over it since it slopes so much

I woulda gone electric with barbed wire. Will keep the dog in plus you can see right through and not block the conservation!

meh, its wood fence. It will be rotten in a few years. We don't need a fence to keep animals in but we're going to do a simple PVC post fence across the front yard.

Wont be rotten aslong as I am here since I will be keeping up with maintenance... at my next house I will do a PVC fence for sure, but in this neighborhood a PVC fence would look akward since it wont match with anyone elses

Mason line is your friend.

Install the corners first. Get them level. put a nail on the top of both of the corners. Tie mason line from one to the other and level it. Done. No more leveling of the fence and you have a straight line.

:)

BTW: post hole drillers are yout friend.

I helped a friend install 5 acres of fence. I would have died if we did it with "manual" post hole shovels.

We used a mason line, its actually still up in the pictures but theres no way you will be able to see it....it really did help alot.

I am doing everything by hand since it only takes me about 3 mins to dig the holes, so its no big deal. Once the rear is closed off we can start on a putting together a nice patio

you are lucky. 10 inches below my topsoil is solid clay. Only plus to that is no need for concrete.

It looks very good. We did ours last year. A couple of 24-7s buddys came over and they had it done in a weekend.

yep i just installed a wooden fence last august. but get this- (how dumb are we) my brother, dad and i were doing it. but once we finished just as the sun went down, we realized that we were too far in the neighbor's yard. he's a real ass so of course he said something. so we had to RE DO it allllll. ack.

oh and one thing you could do to dress it up... we did this at our old house... see where your pillars are? to hold up the fence.... get a lattice and on each end attach it to those pillars. keep it brown (dont spray paint it) but then get some Bogadelia (sp?) and let it grow up the lattice. during springtime it'll bloom bright pink and looks pretty. REALLY helps dress up the fence. however the stems have pricks on them so whenever you go in to trim them, be sure to cover your arms. just a thought :D

I woulda skipped on cementing on all the posts really. I helped did my parents house and our neighboors house when I was younger. We only cemented the corners and were there was a gate at. Still up for after 12-13 years.

Cement is just a waste really... do the ends and then move on.

My dad and I installed my fence, it's a white pvc, I already had fencing along the back of my house, fenced down the sides, it was 28 6' panels, a gate and the posts, it took 2 days and it's backbreaking, a 50lb bag of cement was put on each post, they're going to be staying put.

it's actually not that hard at all if you have the right tools..go out and rent an auger and a screw/nail gun and you'll cut the construction time atleast in half.

I loooove bougainvillea's!!!!! At my parents house we used to have one, but my dad chopped it down because he hated the pricks on the stems, and he said that trimming them was a pain.

Well, you have to understand something... my dad and Kirk are both perfectionists. They have to have everything done perfectly. And also, the hurricane seasons here are just getting worse and worse. I'd rather us do what we can to make the fence stay in place, rather than paying a thousand something dollars on a fence that isn't even going to be up a year. :dunno:
