If you are awaiting hiring by Hillsborough, Tampa, Pasco, etc. and are at least FFI certified we are looking for some people at Pasco County Station 28 in Land O Lakes.
We are an all 24/7 volunteer Engine and Tanker company and we are responsible for fire suppression and medical calls in our zone. We are treated like a career company in that we are first due to any call in our zone, fire, MVA whatever.
If you have any interest in volunteering (plus Pasco volunteers are given preference in the hiring process) and keeping you certs up to date let me know.

I'm curious if volunteers get paid? Is this a full time gig? What do you do for actual money if this doesn't pay?

You dont get paid (except for the $30/month stipend check that usually goes into the station to fund different kids of stuff)
I work a full time job at Mastro Subaru (which pays my bills) and I am usually at the station anywhere from 24-60hrs a week. I volunteer because its my way of giving back to the community, I keep my FF and EMT certs current (and Paramedic when I finish) I get tons of training (High angle rescue, confined space etc) turnout gear and duty uniforms are issued free.
Biggest plus, getting to know all the Captains and Battalion Chiefs and getting the experience that will put me ahead of most people when I turn in my application to Pasco for a career FF.
Put it this way right now there ar something like 60 people on a hiring list, the top 20 or so are volunteers infact numbers 3 and 6 on the list are from my station.
In case I went of track to answer your questions. Not a full time gig we usually ask 24 hrs a week and we break our shifts from 0700-1900 and 1900-0700. No pay it would be in conjunction with whatever you do now for money.

What about Paramedics?
Im not a firefighter yet, but i will be a paramedic by november. Is it a volunteer rescue, or just engine?

Our station only runs a Engine and Tanker, no Rescues. When we need a Rescue they come from Station 23 or 22.
All of Florida now requires all volunteer personel to have a min. of FFI and First Responer to deploy on an engine. Since we dont operate a squad non FFI personel are limited to support roles.
It also sucks that as a volunteer you can only operate at the EMT-B level at the most.
Tommy I just finished school in the EMT class next to you with Chris Johnson. I was the big bald guy in the class as seen here (http://www.myspace.com/ff_paton)
