You can turn solar heaters off, you just have a valve in the system to bypass that part of the system.

i talked to 6 pool companies before i started on my pool and all of them recommended NOT to get solar. They all claim that after year it eventually puts a strain on your roof's structure because of all the weight constantly on it. also it doesn't give you that much heating. I went with a propaine 400btu heater mainly for the spa but also can be used on the pool.

Ive also heard that from the guys that came to my house. I just dont buy into that. It made no sense to me. The water gets spread out over a large area.
I have seen solar panels in place for years and the owners havent seen any issues.

My parents used to have that. It ended up leaking and messed up a portion of the roof, and it leaked down into the house....they had a big wet nasty messed up spot in the ceiling in their bedroom too.

I think it would also depend on the angle of the roof and the amount of sun exposure it receives. Propane is probably a better choice for heating, but solor uses free energy.

You have to have a good placement on the roof. Also people that skimp out and only get like 3/4 panels is pointless. My pool is like BATHWATER its so warm. Before it was cold all year. Now I have to turn the friggin panels off. I also have like 8 or so panels. Never an issues. Well spread out. I think it was around $3000 but it's been a while. I have never liked the butane heaters or heatpumps. way to much energy. Invest in QUALITY solar panels and get the most you can fit on the optimal side of your roof. It uses the existing pool pump and you can just bypass the valves if you ever want to turn it off.
I would recommend a hair larger pool pump also for the increased volume and movement. May not need it but it never hurts.

I have a solar panel thingy on my roof for the hot water heater. A few years ago, I had the water tank relocated/replaced and the guys that worked on it told me they could hook my pool up to the existing panel for like $2400.00
