View Full Version : **looking for a small sized dog**

my boyfriend and i are looking for a puppy that won't get any bigger than 25lbs. we're looking along the lines of french bull dogs, boston terriers, rat terriers, pugs (i'd love to find a pug/rat terrier mix or a french bull/boston terrier mix). we're not opposed to any one particular kind of dog, i'd actually rather have a mutt... just a dog w/ minimal shedding the size of a grown cat, doesn't really matter what kind.

if anyone knows anyone that might be having puppies available soon, that aren't rediculously expensive, please PM me.

thanks,
tiff

Hi, Tiff. Check www.petfinder.com. I just did a search for small sized puppies near Tampa, and there were LOTS. I can't link it here - sorry. I could link individual dogs, but not the search results. It's really easy to do. On the left hand side, put in DOG in the animal section, then "baby" for age, "small" for size, and put in your zip code. You can see pictures and everything.

My best advice is to stay away from the above type situations. Find someone who owns just a few dogs, preferably of the same breed. Meet the mother, meet the father. Temperament and personality is MOSTLY genetic, so your pup will probably act like his sire and dam. Even little quirks are inherited.

If you settle on a breed, go to google and search for that breed's national club. They will have a breeder referral on there.

From there, you can search for someone who health tests their dogs (again...nearly everything is genetic. If you don't want to deal with luxating patellas, get a pup from parents who are tested CLEAR of it, for example). Someone who handles the litter multiple times throughout the day, assessing each pup's personality and temperament. The litter raised IN the home, exposed to normal household sounds.

Don't settle. Most pups from "show" breeders cost about the same as a pet store or newspaper ad puppy, but you'll get a lot more peace of mind and probably cheaper vet bills. You also have advice and support throughout the life of the dog.

This is not hard to find, either. Just go to a local dog show, or search for that parent club. Go back to petfinder.com and contact rescue groups and ask for a breeder referral.

thanks for the info above.

i really actually don't want to go to a breeder because i hear horror stories AND i'd rather give a puppy a home that NEEDS one (i hate the idea of it being put down). i guess i was just posting this as more of a "if anyone knows anyone that NEEDS to place any kind of the above said puppies, then i'm an available person in the next 2-3 months"-that's more of what i'm looking for. i don't mind forking over some cash but i think it's rediculous to spend $1000 on a pure bred when the best dogs i ever got were from the pound... however, i've been going to the pound and having no luck. i'd rather take a chance on a puppy (that i don't know anything about and raise it to my standards), versus an older dog, set in its ways, maybe having issues that need to be worked on, etc... unless that perfect dog comes along and happens to be an older one which i've had happen too. i don't know, maybe i just needed to clarify myself. i really appreciate all the info though!

I'm active on a few yahoo groups for dog rescues. Let me see if I can find something. You want small, fluffy, and puppy or young?

well... under 25lbs (apartment dog)... i want fluffy but my boyfriend is totally against it.... he just wants something ugly that doesn't shed. we don't really care if it's a pure bred or mutt, we just want something to call our own that will also get long w/ my cat. i'm not going to be in a position to have a dog until the next 2-3 months, which is why i was just kind of putting it out there to see what i can find out, thanks for the help!

Wow... i guess you know alot about DOGS  .... How can u give advice to people if u dont know what you are talking about what i put about these dogs... Yeah you might be wright on somethings but not all of it...

How do you know that these dogs dont have people taking care of them 24/7, or being loved... Or the parents being there...

Im not saying that u are wrong, but get more info about what i was posting...

Jersey, you make a lot of ASSumptions about my post. I never said anything about your deal except to avoid them.

Then I listed what to look for when choosing a dog. Again, had NOTHING to do with you, your post, or whatever else you think I'm talking about.

Tiff, here is a reply I got this morning from a rescue friend:

Email my friend Tara at t_drose@yahoo.com their website is:
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/safesocietyofflorida.html

I am helping her with donations for a litter of pups and she said they just pulled a ton of dogs. They need homes badly.
