My wife and I were looking for a tree to put in our front yard last year. Our requirements was it had to be very low maintenance, flower, and not get big enough to have a limb crash through our roof during a storm. We did some research and found crepe myrtle's fit the bill nicely. We found one for $20 and planted it. We planted it last fall and during the winter it was looking sad. No leaves, just twigs staring at us. But once spring came around, we started watering more frequently, and its really taken off. I swear if you stare at it you can see it growing. Its got ALOT of new growth and flowers on them.
The flowers come in a bunch of colors as well, ours is white but there are pink, mauve, purple, red, and some places offer custom colors like blue and green. The nice thing is the leaves are like crepe paper (hence the name) so they are very soft and small. Once they fall to the ground, they don't pile up and get crunchy like alot of trees.
So if you are looking for something to brighten up your yard that takes care of itself, look into them.
