Best part of the article and is how I feel too:

You know what makes me happy? Not being a slave to the things I want to buy. But hey, that’s just me. I also plan to retire early and I feel that I’ll be pretty alone in that endeavor unless I can convince a few now to come with me later. There are legions of people who are going to come face to face with the hard, cold reality that their debt doomed them to a life of dependency on a job at Walmart passing out smiley face stickers and shopping carts. They will find out, too late, that the things that they had to own cheated them out of retirement.

Not keeping up with the Jones' is how I live too. Sure I could have some expensive toys but I do not want to be a slave to them either.

I want to stop working full time by the time I hit 55, have enough money in the bank to live comfortable (and probably in Nebraska  ), and have no bills. I guess starting off with nothing when I got into business for myself was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Not to mention my parents making me have a job when I was 13.

true story. I have finally come to the realization my dad try planting in my head since I was 15 and had my first job. "unless you have the cash to buy it you really don't need it." obviously things like a house don't play a part of this, but putting a $300 item on your credit card cause you know you can make the minimum payments isnt a great idea. but no matter how many times you are told something one must always find out the hard way for themselves :)

Good read!

I am the epitimy of frugal. I drive a 9 year old 151k mile car that was paid with cash. Total depreciation on the car since ownership is around $3,000. I cannot yet bring myself to sell it and get that 4 year old Honda Accord I have my eyes on.

Maybe one day.... A guy can dream, right?

I agree with some of that but credit rules the world these days. Anything from insurance to renting items your credit score plays a big part of it. So financing some things whether you have the cash to pay for it or not is not always bad idea. It is how I jacked my credit score so high too over the years.

I could have paid cash for my new (used) car but didn't. Instead I financed a part of it to continue on my good credit standing. Sure I have to pay the 5.45% interest rate but it is so minimal and the benefits to maintaining my credit score will be far more worth it in the end. Plus the money I would have used to buy the car is making more than 5.45%.

Plus I buy almost everything on my CC then pay it off immediately there after online. Why ? I get air miles (points) for doing it and our last vacation to Colorado was via four free airline tickets from stuff I would have purchased anyway.

Just something to consider.
