City Prepares for Final Installation of Lights On Tampa - Echelman’s Art to Transform Poe Garage
Tampa, FL November 3, 2006 - The final installation for Lights On Tampa 2006 will be officially unveiled on November 17, 2006, and Mayor Pam Iorio will be on hand to officially flip the switch. Festivities for the unveiling of the project will take place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Curtis Hixon Park, adjacent to the Poe Garage. The event will feature a live musical performance by ***D’Visitors***http://www.myspace.com/dvisitors), entertainment for children and food vendors.
The new installation will highlight the luminous works of local artist Janet Echelman in the under hang of the Poe Parking Garage, located on the corner of Ashley Drive and Polk Street. The six-month installation by Echelman will reshape the urban space in the under hang of the Poe Garage with a sculptural intervention that utilizes three-dimensional sculptural scrims and animates the installation with dramatic lighting. Her installations respond to environmental forces like wind and water. Echelman’s work has been honored by Americans for the Arts and in 2005 she was elected to the National Council of the Public Art Network.
Lights On Tampa debuted on January 7, 2006, and has brought thousands of people to Tampa’s downtown to experience the reconfiguration of the urban landscape by utilizing new-media art to illuminate downtown buildings. Lights On Tampa is biennial and returns again in January 2009.
