I used to hate it as well. I still dislike it, but I get results. Two years ago I couldn't run/jog for 30 seconds, now I can go for several minutes without taking a break. I worked myself up to it. You need good shoes, that's key. I wear Nike Free, the best in my opinion. Also, to begin you can walk for a minute, then jog for a minute, then run for a minute. Try this back and forth. You can conserve more oxygen this way. You want to eventually hit your target heart rate, too. http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/l/bl_THR.htm

The best way to not be turned off and get bored is to vary not only the type of running but also the type of cardio you do period. Any cardio you do will benefit your 1.5 mile times.

It goes without saying that the more fat you lose the easier this will be for you.. Make sure your diet is squared away.

You don't have to be a killer at first, just make a concerted effort on your excercise plan and you will make steady progress.

For trimming down the 1.5 mile time I've been doing this:

day 1: Run 5k at the fastest pace you can and still complete the distance. As the weeks progress focus on cutting your time down.
day 2: Stair machine, on 'cardio' routine for 25 mins (I believe the cardio routine is just 80% of your max heart rate)
day 3: 1.5 mi run, as fast as possible, jog for the rest of the time till you've hit 25 mins or so
day 4: ski machine(elliptical) on 'cardio' routine for 25 mins
day 5: Pyramids.. Jog 5 mins, Go as fast as possible for 2 mins, jog for 2 mins, etc for about 25 mins.
day 6: Rowing machine, 500 meter sprint, rest 2 mins, repeat 4 times
day 7: All out sprints.. Jog 5 mins, sprint all out 10 seconds, jog 2 mins, repeat. I also throw some swimming in on Sunday.

For all of these you want to make sure you warm up really good and cool down really well. The most important thing is to take your time and take it easy if you get injured. Don't increase speed+distance at the same time, only increase one.

It's a tough routine, but it will help. I do this after lifting weights.. The only day I don't lift is Sunday. I'm down to 10:20 on my 1.5 mile, trying to get down to 10:00. When I started I was at 11:30 so I've trimmed it down pretty considerably in only a couple of weeks.

I'm guessing you're working on this for some kind of PST?

If you do the elliptical at a mid-level also on other days, it will definitely help. I noticed after doing the elliptical that I could jog much longer.

I would get a good bike and hit up some decent trails if all else fails (with running). I love riding my bike, just haven't had much time to do so lately (or the weather wasn't too great :( ).

i've taken to running on a treadmill, which is something i used to detest, because maintaining my pace without focusing on maintaining my pace makes the process a lot more pleasant. for 1.5 mi in 15 min you simply need to work your way up to 6 mph; 7.5 mph for 1.5 in 12.

Muthafuckin' MP3 player! I just bought one, and the tunes in my ear make my 20 minutes of cardio whizz by.

Seriously, I was amazed at how much better I run with my mp3 player plugged into my head

I was against the mp3 player hype for years, but I just broke down and bought a cheapy Sandisk player. Totally worth it when doing cardio. If you're running on a treadmill, it's not hard to set that thing on top and watch a video while you run too. A normal TV show is about 20 minutes, which covers cardio time perfectly.

i'm definitely far from an expert on running, and i'm not saying that this will work for you, but i can tell you what worked really well for me. it was running a far distance at a slow pace in order to improve my time at a shorter distance.

when i started running, i could barely jog a mile. it took me 12 and a half minutes, haha. i decided to try this method. i run at an easy pace where i can comfortably breath in through my nose and out through my mouth in a steady manner. when i'm done running, my legs are really tired, but i'm not winded. eventually, my runs got up to 6.5 miles that way.

after running like that three days a week for not even four months, i ran a mile to see where i was at, and it was 6 minutes. i had cut my time in half without doing any fast running. i had never run less than an 8 minute mile before this, and i've always hated running, and this worked for me.

i definitely agree with the mp3 player. i had a shitty one for a while, but i recently bought an ipod shuffle. its awesome. $80, holds 1 gb, no need for a case or armband since it clips right to clothing, and its weighs almost nothing.

I like riding my bike more. I feel like im going somewhere, and it doesnt pound the crap outta my feet. I usually ride 2 miles, and I keep it up a brisk pace in the higher gears. I usually do it in under 20 minutes

I would make one of those a rest day, you want to give your body a chance to recover. Working out everday is a good way to get burnt out and over train.

running on a treadmill sucks. music makes everything better. i like to run on the beach, its a workout for your legs and the scenery is beautiful... sometimes.

+1 million to mp3 player. my puppy used mine as a chew toy, so sometimes it randomly turns off. I run 1-2 miles every day for 5 days in a row.. and tonight i was about half way done when my mp3 player went out. Running without music is soooo hard for me.

Also , I used to run all-out 1 miles and i first began at 10 minutes and worked my way down to 8.5 minute mile in just 2 weeks. It wasn't easy, I really pushed myself.. but now I do the jog/walk/jog/walk because it's better for weight loss .

I also suggest if you run on a treadmill to mix up the incline.

you want to work the other muscle groups too. if you dont have access to a tradmill runs stadiums or find a nice pair of stairs. if you work hard you shouldnt be able to walk straight the next day

i tried the mp3 player thing, but i really need to do it without anything like that because i dont want to rely on it, because, as the pig ;) said, im training for the academy

my biggest problem is not my legs keeping up, its me felling all winded and out of breath after a fairly short time.

Take it slow and easy. Work your way up. Honestly, if you try to do it all at once you're going to get burnt out. The only way to make it happen is to slowly work up to it. Run for 1 minute, then walk, then run for 1 min, then walk. Back and forth. Or even 2-3 minutes. Whatever you can do.

yea, i been doing that a lot actually, more like 1.5-2 min, then walk fast for a min, jog again, etc.

i did hit 1.03 miles in 10:49, which is minimal qualifying time that i need! so from here its all uphill!
