I just bought this:

My question is, and I know its a little late now, but has anyone had any negative experience extending HDMI/DVI over CAT5 via one of these extender systems? My rationale for it is simple, I want to use my computer in my bedroom on my plasma and have it done reasonably simple. My solution is this, the product I purchased above and one of these:

Any suggestions/ideas other than what I'm doing that might be helpful would be great.

With DVI you should be ok, we've been having a lot of problems with the HDMI switchers, not so much the extenders. I been hearing good things about these, let me know if you have any issues, I'll do what I can to help you out. Did you buy it straight through Gefen?

I didn't, I bought it through NextWarehouse as it was the cheapest (450ish+shipping). I've been pondering the idea for about two weeks now and finally decided I wanted to do something about it.

I have Vista Ultimate on my desktop as well as built-in Media Center which I use somewhat through my Xbox 360 its just not enough. VNC Client has worked well, but when I want to see what the hell I'm doing a little window isn't going to suffice.

Have you worked with one of these extender setups before? I hear they are popular amongst expensive Home Theatre solutions where wires can't easily be extended in their current form, migrating the signal to a Cat5/6 cable to do the job.

Yeah, we use them for that exact application. You can't run DVI or HDMI very far, the best solution right now is to use these CAT5 extenders. Where you may have a problem is with Vista, and DRM, if you're using blu ray or HD-DVD drive/player/content. When we've had a problem with the Gefen units it's usually due to HDMI's restrictions (you have to have a constant connection to the display otherwise it will cut off the signal), or when we're trying to show two different resolutions using a switcher (I know, I know).

Some of the units say they're HDCP, however when in actual use, have not been, at least it's not handshaking correctly. Gefen has been helpful in some situations, but not in all.

You seem to have a very versed background with this type of application, if I were to have any questions for you would you mind if I addressed them with you via PM or whatnot?

definitely, let me know. If I can't help you for whatever reason, I can find someone who knows more than I do, so you should be taken care of (however I may require you to buy from my company instead of where you buy stuff now, just kidding!)
