Hillsborough Community College is negotiating with an Atlanta builder who wants to put student housing on the college's Dale Mabry Highway campus.

The HCC board of trustees is scheduled to review the proposal today.

The $18.2-million complex with 144 apartments serving 414 students would be built on 7.5 acres west of the campus at Lois Avenue and Tampa Bay Boulevard.

Florida law prohibits community colleges from using state money for dormitories.

So they have started building the housing right next to the roundabout...

results are going to be interesting.

we talked about this in class one time so i can't take all the credit; but at the rate tampa is growing HCC won't be a community college forever.

I thought the WT edwards building was gonna be the housing, guess I was wrong. I'm not sure who owns WT edwards still but if that is also HCC property now and not govt property just think what else can be placed there....

The airport has also been buying the property in Drew Park so if anything the college and the airport will both have conflict of interest down the line.

HCC is also building a new campus, forgot where, and having Ybor campus redone so the college has a lot of money to play with by the looks of it.

Student housing might probably be used as a cash cow for a few years, be torn down and then either be rebuilt as condos that the college will rent out or be used as more classrooms, either way owning that specific part of land has a lot of value and can't go wrong.

Or the state will come in and argue that HCC took money from state funding through loop holes and take it away from the school.

If no state money to help build it. I am guessing rent is going to be high. Who will be managing this property?

IRCC has dorms but they have a strong courseload with FAU and share 2 campuses. HCC is solo except for the usf transfer ability so this will be interesting.

Birth rate and dropout rates going up in HCC future???

They are probably able to do it through a loop hole since so many USF students are cross enrolled at HCC. I bet HCC will turn into what SPC is in the future and be a 4 year college since Tampa is growing so much. I bet this will also bring a lot of school spirit and networking to HCC as well since students will be living with eachother and get to know eachother.

On a side note, my accounting teacher said that the new section they built to the social sciences building is for a new student lounge; however, they didnt open it because there isnt enough funds for furniture so they are waiting until next semester.

I think all these funds should be spent on people trying to go to the school; not improving a school people will only be at for 2 years. I applied for aid/funds numerous times and been denied since I "Make too much money"....yeah...I wish. Family of 9 with 3 kids trying to go to school....still get denied. Next time Ill apply and claim im spanish or something.

i heard that the president does not want to make hcc a 4 year school. she wants to keep it two. anyway you look at it hcc needs to stay two years where else is there another community college. its better serveing the community at a two years than four. if you want to go further in your education go to usf.
