My 13 year old niece got caught doing 'inappropraite' things on her laptop. Originally, they were going to just take away her laptop, but she need it because she is home schooled over the internet with it. So, I was asked to lock it down tighter than a ducks ass in a hurricane.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. Made HD as first boot device, and PW locked Bios (No backdoor access by CD)
2. Created an admin account with a stong password. Changed nieces accout to have little to no rights (I.E. She can not install programs, or manipulate system files)
3. Physically removed wireless card (No more surfing from her bedroom when nobody is looking...she has to have a cable attached)
4. Removed all Yahoo Messanger, AIM, MS Live, and Myspace IM
5. Removed Webcam drivers and programs
6. Locked down content filtering (ie7). I included 'do not allow unrated sites'.
With current set-up, she can not load off of CD and bypass/change pw's. She can not install new programs without my consent. She can not install any new messenger programs, she can not use her webcamera, and she can not even surf google.com.
I'd say it's locked down...any other ideas?
And yes, I hated doing it, but she is only 13, and I found several 'illegal' pictures of her, and found some chat logs that are worthy of Dateline.
I have another 24 hours to add any other suggested items...hit me with them!

Keylogger, get MySpace password, cancel MySpace account, get e-mail password, setup rule to permanantly delete *@myspace.com e-mails before downloading from server (if using Outlook, if not then I don't know what other options are out there).
If you're 13 year old is a hooker in the making then the only one to blame is MySpace... plain and simple.

modify her hosts file for a few known websites like myspace, meebo.com, friendster, etc..
point them all to disney.

get a keylogger
+1 on there, there is one called the invisible keylogger that will email keystroke logs as well as screenshots of the desktop at set invervals.
also, if you want to allow her IM'ing again at some point, my friend works at this company www.imsafer.com which will alert parents when an online conversation turns inappropriate

Cool, now instead of talking about it on the internet she'll have plenty of time to go out and do said "inappropriate" things.
Sounds pretty secure.
It'd be easy to get around the bios security obviously, but I doubt she knows about live CD's.
or even just removing the CMOS battery for a couple seconds....

Okay...
I will add a keylogger
I will mess with the hosts file (Classic!!!). Not sure if will be needed or not though. Currently, I can't even browse to Disney. The ONLY site I can access is the Florida Virtual School site...
Yes, she can get around Bios security, and make a live CD, but alot of that would require her
A. knowing what she needs to do (remember, she's only 13...I've thrown the gauntlet down on her).
B. the ability to research the procedures (She can't access any websites...not going to be easy)
As far as her 'gong out', without going into details, she has never had that kind of freedom. She is home-schooled. She volunteers at a nursing home that my Aunt works at (aunt is nurse practioner). She's under pretty decent supervision, but they never thought about the laptop. Apparently, not everybody watches Dateline.
As far as the 'Pictures' comment...13yo = child porn.

When met by an oppressive force, one tends to rebel and fight the force anyway possible... so when she's 15 she'll either be sneaking out of the house at night or spending all her time online laughing with her 1337 friends about your "security" while you get doctored logs and next time you try to login she'll have secured it so that your only option is to tell her parents its time to buy a new laptop... give me her number in 6 years.

Fuck all this. Basically you're just forcing her to find OTHER ways to be a rebellious whore. You need to figure out WHY she's doing this. You're putting a bandaid on on a severed limb. Send her to counseling. With overprotective, sheltering parents like that, it's no wonder she's trying to screw "the man", pun intended.

You should be a Guidance Counselor... I would send my kids to your school.

I'm completely and wholly against protecting your kids to this level, but, it's not our kid, or his for that matter.
I pretty much assume any child brought up like this will wind up pregnant at 18, if that.

this is true. when my dad tried to ground me from my PC, he put an admin password on boot up. i just grabbed a book for the mainboard i had and reset the CMOS by removing the battery and viola, i was able to use my PC again. i didn't really even get on the internet much back then and disconnected my lan cable so he wouldn't see my link and act lights lit on the router in the living room. to this day, he never found out.
whats the gateway out to the net done with ?.. put in a proxy.

It's not my call on how she is raised, nor is it my concern how they handle this issue. Ideally, they would have just taken away the laptop, but she needs it for school, so I am doing what I can.
I promise you, I will not have similar issues with MY SON. Hell, I have a sonicwall TZ170, and I can add content filtering to that to lock him out.
I don't think it's about stopping them, but rather teaching them to surf responsibly. Also, active monitoring is key...even letting them know your watching.
You can only do so much.

I would remove the content protection and find out who shes talking to and nab them. You are not going to stop her no matter what you do.
I know because I was homeschooled and I got into every churchgoing homeschool girl's pants in our association. You will drive her further into whatever promiscuous activities she is starting to dabble.
