View Full Version : Question about a virus
I bought McAfee Total Protection thinking it would get rid of everything bad on my computer, but since I've installed it, my computer keeps restarting randomly which leads me to believe that there is a virus on my computer. My question is, if McAfee isn't getting it off, how do I get it off my computer?

First step is to determine if it is a virus. Next you have to find out which virus it is. Once you know that you'll be able to find out how to remove it. When you know the virus name/version post it up and somebody can point you in the right direction.

Your saying your computer was restarting randomly before you installed McAfee?
Then after installing McAfee it continued to reboot at odd times?
Don't use Internet Explorer, or Outlook. Use Firefox and a good online web email client (I recommend Google).
Make sure windows is patched and updated.
Install http://www.clamwin.com/ and set it to update nightly and scan nightly.
Get rid of the McAffee crap.
install http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and run it regularly.
I haven't had a virus in many many years and all I do is the above. I'm not "lucky", its not magic, I just practice safe computing.

I don't know about all that stuff - I have yet to ever run an anti-virus, or software based firewall.
I monitor system usage and processes, and in over 10 years, have not gotten a virus I didn't actively seek out. :dunno:
Those programs Zate posted are highly reputable though. : )

+1....occasional spyware, but nothing major.

Does it go through a shutdown sequence or does it just hard power off?
mcafee sucks. download AVG for free....best antivirus i've ever used.
I'm willing to bet it's a hardware issue, be it something overheating or a back stick of ram.
Mcafee is gross
Haven't had a chance to get back to the thread. Thanks for the help so far from everyone. The computer ran fine before I installed McAfee, just ran slow. I installed McAfee and ran it, which the computer starting running better for a couple of weeks. Since then, the computer will reboot itself randomly and now, I can't even get on the regular start up (have to use safe mode in order to get on the internet). I have ran DOS scans, which haven't helped.

In the past studies show that free Anti Virus programs typically detect and remove more viruses than programs that cost money. Then again, I haven't researched anti virus programs in 2-3 years so it might be different now.
