I gotta stop blowing money, but this guitar really needed a good home. Plus, I really needed an ES-335, so here's the 1981 Gibson ES-335 I picked up today:

Shit, that thing hasn't fed back yet and I've had it cranked up pretty loud through my rig. I got that bastard for a steal at $1630 and change.

Thanks man. It makes me look small when I play it because the thing is so big. It's like have a pizza strapped to me! That thing is massive compared to my Les Paul. I'll get a side by side shot tonight when I get home so you can understand what I mean.

I was lucky enough to own an epiphone copy.

I've played a lot of hollows, including the Epiphone, and nothing has that sound. Gretsch guitars have a good tone, but not that, and I played one of those Ibanez Artcores which was definitely good for the money. In fact, the only thing that comes close is a made in Japan Ibanez Art series from the 80's. My music instructor has one and he let me play it. It's so close to a 335 it's amazing.

Yeah, it was either '81 or '82 when the stopped production of the original ES-335. That price range seems pretty accurate for that year guitar, so yeah, I got a good deal.

I just finished setting the guitar up since the previous owner had it sorta out of whack. It just didn't feel right. A little truss tweak, bridge height adjustment, and a 50's style job on the tail piece, and now this thing is bad the fuck ass! I can't tell which one plays better now, my Les Paul or my ES-335. It's a toss up since they both almost play themselves.

I dunno, I never tried it. It's not really complex more than it is fast anyway. When I hear dudes play like that all I can think is, "Look how many notes I can play mom!"

 it's not as bad as you think. the solos on the other hand, that's a whole other ball of wax. i only know a few van halen solos like eruption, cathedral - i pretty much stick to the old vh hits like 1984 and prior, like panama. practically the whole van halen ii record is pretty easy to play with the exceptions of when eddie takes off on a tangent. there's some good fucking rock on their older shit - and eddies tone just kicks everyone's ass.

little tidbit, frankenstein used a single paf pickup out of an es335 - eddie dipped it in parafin wax, damn near melted the coils in the process. i'm trying to get my hands on an EVH custom shop humbucker, seymour duncan wants $140 for it...it's as close as you're gonna get to his original pick up.

You could wax pot a PAF yourself. Buy any old PAF on eBay, they're cheap since people replace pickups in Les Pauls all the time, and wax 'er up. Most of the new PAFs are wax potted anyway.

i noticed this when i got my razorback. the magnet on the Dimebucker is encased in parrafin wax. when i'm standing about 3-4 feet from my cabinet, it won't feedback on it's own, even with the volume all the way up. now my epiphone black beauty, forget about getting close to the cabinet with the volume turned 1/4th up - that bitch is crazy and built like a shit-brick house. that thing is so goddamn heavy it's ridiculous.

The pickup i'm actually gonna end up using is from seymour duncan - but it isn't listed on any of their websites or any of their catalogues. It's the EVH Custom Shop pickup - they have to make the damn thing - it's not a production pickup - which probably means it's a bad motherfucker. From what i understand - this is the EXACT pickup ed used in frankenstein - seymour duncan was the one that put together the original pickup - the one for the es335. i'm not brave enough to do it myself - my luck i'd melt the coil wraps and be out $140....

also, i redid frankenstein this weekend. it looks sooooo much better than the first try - no wrinkles in the paint - i'll have some pictures of it up this weekend. i'm gonna be going with a strat neck from warmoth.com. maple neck/fingreboard - satin finish, schaller machine heads and predrilled and countersinked for an original floyd rose. it's gonna be a bad mofo.
