I'm feeling like an old man today.....
When I was only 5 years younger, I could wake up smoke a cigarette, pound a bottle of Gatorade, and smoke a 3 miler in under 20 mins.
Now I get 2 miles into a nice 7.5 minute pace and my shins feel like glass (more of the muscle behind the shins - I'm guessing I'm not stretching enough/at all?), and then when I get back - I have zero appetite....
Anyone else have this lack of appetite or pain in the lower legs (not exactly the shin, more the muscle/tendon/ligament right behind the shin about halfway down).
Or should I just go see the doctor and get the legs cut off?

I get the same pain in my shin muscle. I could run much further cardio wise but the muscle hurts so bad that I have to slow to a walk for a few minutes before I can run again.

My knees and lower back start hurting terribly when I jog/sprint. I stopped due to this and now I use the spin bike mostly and sometimes the elliptical.

shin splints... its common to get. Try tapping you toes for a few mintues before you start running. It helps.
For joint pain, try some glucosamine. You can get it at publix. When I stated muay Thai my joints were killing me. I take a glucosamine everyday and no longer have issues.

I give my dog glucosamine for her slipping knee. It hasn't come out once since I started giving it to her. Maybe I should try it myself.

Have you tried different types of running sneakers?

Which leads to the next question......
Where is a really good runners depot/store in the bay area?
Someone that looks at your foot and picks the perfect pair/type of shoe for them?

I will have to ask my boss about where he want. He mention they took measurements his whole foot and such. Also, made him jog and walk on some machine to give him the size and type he need to buy on some New Balance. I know its up here in Clearwater but I won't know till Tuesday. BAstard is already gone!
I know my knee problem I was having for awhile went away. Not taking anything other than stretchin my calves and some good running sneakers! (roughly $90 at Sports Authority) BUT.......I have purchased the $39 ones w/ no problem at all. Just made sure I got the correct size (special order in most cases!)

I used to jog a lot with Nike Free and I love them. I'm pretty sure it's not the shoes.

those shoes are great for people who aren't heel-strikers. my 3.0s were just delivered today. i'm looking forward to trying them out tomorrow.

it's not that great at preventing problems. i've read a few studies over the years that point to it only releaving moderate to severe problems with joints. mild issues or as a preventative measure it doesn't seem nearly as effective.
having a nice mix of injuries myself, i supplimented glucosamine when i was working out and had a lot less problems as far as joint and bone pain when lifting or during recovery and a lot less issues overall in everyday activities. plenty of a/d/calcium helps build up bone density and aid in various bone/joint injuries like breaks, splints, worn joints, etc.
ive damaged my lower back and both knees, broken both arms and wrists, pulled my left shoulder a time or two, and fractured my left ankle over the years since i was a kid till fairly recently so ive got a good history of dealing with it and testing lots of remedies

glucosamine works. at least it worked for me.
run barefoot
do heavy squats
do the olympic lifts
do heavy weight training and deadlifts
the weight training will strengthen your muscles, keeping all your joints together, so you can run.
