I've been going to the gym frequently since I got back in town from various cities and that has been going well.

I haven't been doing any running for God knows how long.. I'd say since May or so.

Well, I decided to go for like a mile jog tonight since it is kind of cool out. I swear I feel like I am completely out of shape! After a few minutes I was winded and my chest was sore.. this sucks!

What do you all do when getting back into the routine of running? How far do you run for the first week or so to get back in the groove?

2 miles the first day... 1 mile the second day. 1 mile the third day. rest. then hit it hard with 5 -6 -whatever.

at least that's what i do when i have more than a month off

Intervals, short/medium, medium/long (depending on the 2nd run).

Intervals are usually 800 yards x 2, 400 yards x 2, then 200 yards x 2.

Short/Medium is between 2 and 4 miles.

Medium/Long is between 3 and 7 miles.

I either do a short and long run, or two medium runs depending on the week - as time goes on 2 a days, and 5 to 6 run days....

Those are definitely going to be goals for me. It's like I can't run very far without having to take a quick breather. Summer was horrible for me since I didn't do any running and I'd be out drinking, eating shitty, and of course I would smoke when I drank.

I think the smoking had a big toll on me. :(

i hate hate hate hate hate ahte hate hate smoking.

even if i go to a club, i struggle running the next day if it's really smokey in there. i can't stand it.

i can't even date girls who smoke. it's so disgusting. it tastes bad. ugh. why do people enjoy smoking :(

I ran a 19:10(5k) when smoking a pack a day of Camel - Turkish Gold cigarettes.

Smoking makes your lungs a little harder to work with - but also desensitize them as well.

Florida is the only state with a more active running community in the fall/winter, eat it up!

For the record, I haven't smoked in over a year now. : )

Well, i am just starting out again, after about 2 years of being a lazy ass and gaining 30 lbs.

I have a park that is like my front yard and they have a trail that is 6/10 of a mile. I have a HARD time jogging/running half of it without stopping.

I read on TF about the couch to 5k and i googled it. It has helped me sooo much!

I dont follow it per se any more, but every morning, when i run/jog/walk, its muchhh easier.

For me it's the mental endurance, not physical that gets me. I get bored with running/jogging. I like to do it outside, but that has to take place in the evening for me because I'm really sensitive to the sunlight (I get migraines and such). I just hope the evenings I set to jog have clear weather, because if not I have to go on the boring treadmill. When I first started jogging miles I didn't look anything up, but I sort of felt it out. I would jog for 2 minutes then walk for 30 seconds to a minute, etc. Something like that worked for me then eventually I could jog the whole way through. I still get bored with that on the treadmill though so I mix in walking/jogging on a steep incline as well.
