View Full Version : Pushing myself = great satisfaction

This thread isn't much more than an excuse for me to brag :p And to get some advice about something....
I recently started going to the gym - after I gained about 15 pounds in a month, ruined a bunch of pants because of buttons popping, etc...So I decided that it was high time I start putting my energy to use. I started out by jogging about a mile every other day. Did this for a couple of weeks. Then I faced the fact that I was severely slacking and not taking it very seriously. So I decided that I would spend a full hour at the gym (my apartment complex gym). And yesterday I ran 3.1 miles :) I picked that distance because my mom is always bugging me to run races with her and since she usually runs the 5k, I decided that I would train for it. I intend on doing it again tomorrow.
Anyhow, I could have run further, but my foot started to hurt....I have - what you call - a bunion in my right foot. It's not really that bad but it's been there since I was born (the way the foot grew), and I was never really concerned, until now. It's causing me a great deal of pain when I run...to the point that I have to stop. The one time I have seen a podiatrist (when I was a pre-teen) he told me not to be concerned unless it starts causing pain and/or prevents me from doing certain things. Does anyone here have any experience with bone spurs/bunions? Will I need to get surgery? If it gets worse I may end up going to a podiatrist, but I figured I could check opinions here before spending the money. Thanks for any and all advice :)

How's your health insurance? If its good then just do the surgery or whatever and fix it now. I'm sure there's some kind of thing you can put in your shoe to make it easier but I don't know if it'd be any good.
And you should change your name from Krystle Burger to Krystle Bunion.

I have health coverage until I graduate (in May) so you're right, it's probably a good idea to take care of it while the insurance is available. I've heard about the things to insert in shoes - might be worth a try. And I'll pass on the name change ;)

^ I've cut back on beer BIGGG time. I knew that's where most of my weight gain came from and so I limit myself to once or twice a week. (Tonight I'm treating myself to some Pumpkin Beer at WOB - only because of my run last night) :)

 You boys should swing by afterwards. I'll be there with Caryn (the girl his gf works with at Victoria's Secret).
And no, it's not really an excuse...but I don't have as guilty of a conscience since I DID run 3 miles the night before. (and will continue to do so)

I'd definitely see a Dr. before your insurance expires. Good job on the gains though.
15 lbs in a month from beer? Damn, I need to party with you.
But yeah, if its already hurting you it ain't gonna get any better. Get it taken care of and then get back in the saddle.

Well shit, if you're close to the gym, why the hell don't you join up with our Muay Thai classes?
You'll be the 2nd hottest girl in the gym. And we might even let AquaMan leghump you. And no, you won't get the joke until you see him in action. In the mean time, though, I will amuse myself with it.

who the hell would be first hottest?!  I'm actually not that close to the gym. I live out in Wesley Chapel, just go to Citrus Park to hang with my brother and friend Caryn.

Get some Dr. Scholls inserts for your foot for now, but bone spurs and bunions require some surgery depending on how bad it is! good job Krystle! but ohh maybe you should try running on something other than a machine? like grass. just a thought.its easier on your joints and your bunion:lol:

What if you use an elliptical instead until you can get it taken care of? You won't have the constant pounding on your feet from running on a treadmill.

Her name's Tara and she's pretty damn good. Hits pretty hard; she certainly left a lot of bruises on me! You should come by sometime to check it out. Unless you're skurred...

My dad has a bone spur and has been complaining about it since before he and my mom split about 9 1/2 years ago. So i don't have any idea how painful it can be.

Where do you train? Not that you invited me, but I need to toughen up and spend the money.
Krystle, great job with the cardio! I need to get you into a little weight training. ;) I think you should definitely see a doctor and contemplate surgery because it will benefit you in the long run. I have some nerve problem with my foot and I have avoided surgery on it since it only hurts until I can't walk every so often.

They have 2 locations, but I personally train at the one in Westchase at Impact Martial Arts Academy. Our classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays and run from 8 to 10. Seriously, just come out and watch one night. Our instructor Dan is the nicest guy in the world and is great with new people. We also just got a brand new girl in addition to Tara, and she's short so you'd have a good partner! ;)

American Running Company in Dunedin on Main Street (if your in the neighborhood), has very accomplished and knowledgable staff willing to help you. It could be just as simple as changing out your footwear. If that still doesn't help getting a surgery (I have heard of people getting corrective surgery for bunions and spurs) may be the only option for you.
That's great about the 5k's, I'm out nearly every weekend - if you see me give a wave while you pass!

God I'm so tempted! I need to just budget my money elsewhere and spend it on Muay Thai or another type of sport. I wish I was working more and not going to school every day. I could go there after my weight training.

 Woops!
Little late maybe, but I have had bruised heels before and they hurt like all hell so maybe you bruised something? Donnie might be able to tell ya that boots, wood floors and stomping eventually make for sore feet.

Try out the elliptical and see how it works for you. I have a hard time running because i have awful knees, and they have a hard time getting used to the pounding. I switched to elliptical and all my aches and pains went away.

Due to having to blown out knees from all that running in the Army, I can only use the elliptical machine. Every once in a while I'll run but I feel the wrath the next day.

Watch out - and don't train too hard....hurting yourself and getting an injury is the worst thing ever! :(
Ice down anything and everything that hurts, and you'll be pounding out the miles! Good job on keeping up the great work!
Ohh, and stretch, stretch, stretch - I hate it - but its really important, especially as none of us are getting younger, unfortunately.
