doesn't seem to bad. I personally feel they need to make the process as easy as possible. Continue to have people register to vote, but give them a secure website in which they can vote from home, work, etc. this will also give the public real-time stats and for review purposes make the system store each voter id along with his/her vote in a secure database which would be review if needed. I think a lot more people would vote if it was as easy as logging into a website, typing in your id and making a few clicks here and there..

I would prefer a popular vote system to our current electoral vote system. A lot of people don't vote because they believe that the system is broken, the voting method is a part of that system and I feel that we can do a lot better.

I love the idea of internet voting but not for the reasons you list.

For one, voting should be reasonably accessible but if it is as easy as turning on your home computer then I wonder how much effort a voter will put into actually studying the candidates or issues.

Another thing is, any software developer will tell you hacking a system will be a lot easier than stacking a chad count.

The reason I would like to see internet voting is because I can foresee a time when the people will actually be able to vote on things like the budget. Which, depending on how we migrate towards it may or may not be a good thing, but it would be democratic.

How much effort do some of the voters put into researching their votes today? Many simply vote for whomever they are told to by media, "community leaders", etc. I don't think this will ever change, but internet based will help a lot of people cast their vote who may not have been able to otherwise.

I do not foresee "hacking" to be an issue. How often is the network for some of our "elite" government agency's breached by hackers? I'm willing to bet... never. I think it's only a matter of time..

I think that internet voting is a bad thing, making people actually go to the polls forces people to actually cast an informed vote. An informed vote where they elect who will give them the most free stuff will be the death of our country.

Now about the electoral college. The electoral college was invented to prevent the candidates from just campaigning and appealing to the people in the big cities. Why go to Idaho when LA has then times the value? The only city in Florida that would get any candidate visits if we went to a direct popular vote would be Miami.

Do you really want the fate of this country decided by New York, Boston, LA, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, and Dallas? Because in a direct election it's much more time efficient to stump just in those cities since they get so few votes if they go to farm states.

I don't believe our systems is broken, only have we had issues with popular vote winner not matching the electoral college vote winner. In 200 years thats not bad.

You are sadly mistaken.

You need to change "never" to "daily".

There is some access compromised on some "elite" government system daily. How contained that compromise ends up being is what's important.

The reality is that if they ever opened internet voting, I'd be the first to send in my paper absentee ballot, just like I did this past vote.

Do you really think the majority of the people who vote take the time to seriously research the candidates and then vote based on their research? I don't think they do.. I think a lot of votes are based off biased sources, media, recommendations from friends/family/community leaders, etc. Look at the large religious groups.. in NY there are A LOT of hasidic jews.. I'd be willing to bet the majority of them voted.. and they probably all voted for the candidate they were told to vote for by their "leaders".

I think its just a matter of time before we'll be voting from home, work, etc.

True that there are groups that don't cast an informed vote, but going to the polls make it harder to stuff the ballot box. Look how often we get "Vote for me" in FFA, it will be worse when you can vote yourself government benefits.

Since I am a government contractor, let's just say that I just "know" these things...

I agree 100% and our founding fathers thought the same and this is why the electoral college was set up. Only a hand full of cities in this country with the most population would be deciding the entire election.

Internet voting would be a bad thing. I see nothing good comming out of it unless you consider mass fraud a good thing.

How much effort do some of the voters put into researching their votes today?

Little. But they have to make a small effort to actually go somewhere and vote, which translates to giving a shit about whatever the vote is about.

I'm not disagreeing with you. As I said I see online voting coming. But society needs to be in the right mindset to do it and take it somewhat seriously.
