Wouldn't that mean the person they choose would have less of a chance of winning the general election if they choose somebody who's not as popular?

The general election is not a popular vote.

I think the electoral college is dumb...i think the people should get the president they vote for. Shit, Russia goes by popular vote for christs sake! Why should we even be allowed to vote if it all falls to the electoral college to make the ultimate decision.

The electoral college is a system of balancing the votes, if we didn't have the electoral college, do you really think that you would see any of the candidates outside of the 5-6 major cities?
The electoral college was well thought out, just like how our congress is designed, it still gives the large states clout, while still allowing the smaller states a say in the action. The system isn't broken I believe only twice has the popular vote winner, not won the electoral college, and in both cases the votes were close.
One final note, the United States of America is not a direct democracy, it's a Representative Republic, how our Congress is made up, and how we vote for President reflect this.

Ehh, idk i think it could work. But im no expert, i just dont like the idea of my vote going to shit because in all reality it comes down to 538 people to choose the president.

In a direct election it can come down to one person in a close race. It was just that the vote was so close, and those were votes that the machines were unsure about, so the election came down to how those ballots were read.
