So, I'm considering getting a bicycle to commute to work.
1. I don't work that far away from home. (About 5 miles.)
2. It's good exercise.
3. Save money since I won't have to purchase gas often.
Does anyone else use a bike to get to places? I'm wanting to do it mainly for exercise. Any cons to it other than weather related ones? Anyone have a ladies bike in their garage collecting dust that they want to sell me? How good of an exercise do you think this is? Any laws that I should know about? (I have looked most of them up.)
That is all. :)

You can probably find a bike on craigslist. I bet it's decent exercise (10 miles all together). An average spin class of 50 min. is supposed to be like 20-25 miles. Not sure how accurate that is, but it's a good workout.
The only laws I know about are... watch out for car doors, watch out for cars PERIOD (people are assholes), and have a padded gel seat.

I found a ton of stuff on craigslist but they are all so far away! (Too far to just swing by during the week.) I'll have to do some traveling this weekend! :D

5 miles is a lot longer then most people think.
15 minutes at a race pace, or a half-an-hour to a full hour at an average cyclists pace.
Then you'll have to lock it up/store it somewhere while you're at work.....
Also in the heat you're going to sweat, and if you roll through any water the back tire will kick up a stream from your butt crack to between your shoulder blades. Also be sure to get a flat tire kit - so you can repair and get back on the road if you do have an issue. 5 miles at a walk will equal about an hour to two hours. ; )
Good luck, I have a Trek 1000 if you want to pick one up. ; )

I realize how far it is since I drive there everyday. Plus, I used to ride a bike for exercise and would go about three miles or more. I know it will be hard work at first. I'm thinking it will take me no longer than an hour. I guess I should try it out on the weekend to be sure. I don't sweat much so I'll just get some Axe or something. That crap covers just about any smell up. Haha. I'll just be smelling like a guy all day.
I looove this antique one that I found but I don't think it would be very comfortable.

I may be getting this one this weekend. It's got to be one where the middle is low like this. (Ladies bike) I'm too short to get on a guys bike comfortably! Haha.

So, the most wonderful boyfriend in the world bought me this last night. (Had to give him credit. Hehe)
Sorry for the crappy pic... there isn't a lot of room on the porch. I rode it home but I can't wait to take it out this weekend. :)

I know tons of people that ride bikes to work and school and they really don't have any problem. The only problem they have is dealing with people in cars. One of them in particular doesn't to any other exercise and he did races that were 50+ miles.

If you're going to be riding 100% on the street i would reccomend throwing some road going tires on there. that will help a great bit alone.

I'm going to try to stick to the sidewalk as much as possible. I don't trust being that close to cars. They don't pay attention and I always hate when there is hardly any room and I have to squeeze around a bike. I'm pretty sure there is a sidewalk the entire way to my work. Just have to cross 2 or 3 major intersections. (One being 60 :( )

So, I rode my bike to work today for the first time. It took about 40 mins. I am so exhausted still and I still have the ride home! It's sure a good workout though! It's going to suck when it's hot out! I need to start drinking more water...
