Republican presidential candidate John McCain criticized his Democratic rivals on Tuesday for pledging to renegotiate a hemispheric trade treaty that Democrats blame for U.S. manufacturing job losses.
At a town-hall meeting in St. Louis, the Arizona senator also called for the Democratic-controlled U.S. Congress to approve a free-trade treaty with Colombia that is being stymied on Capitol Hill.
"On trade, I'm a free trader," McCain told employees at Savvis Internet company, a session dominated by questions about the ailing U.S. economy.

As opinion leaders and pundits around the world debate the pros and cons of the Central America Free Trade Agreement and the Andean Free Trade Agreement, I couldn't help but remember back a dozen years ago, when I was the envoy of the Mexican agribusiness during the run-up to NAFTA's confirmation in Mexico City, Washington and Ottawa.
Those opposed to creating a free trade zone between our countries had a lot to say. They spread fears, threats and pessimistic prognoses. They used narrow-minded arguments ranging from old-school jingoism to high-tech racism. They said Mexico was a Third World country that would never become a market for goods produced in the United States.
On the other side, there were those of us envisioning a continent of openness, of open ideas and open markets. And although the secret to our success in conceiving and passing the North American Free Trade Agreement then is the same we would use today - we told the truth about how free trade helps create jobs and expand economies - it would be in the best interest of Mexico, Canada and the United States to recommit ourselves to the spirit of open, free trade.
The truth is an easy sell: Free trade works. Free trade creates wealth and jobs.
The truth is that the United States, Canada and Mexico, and particularly Arizona and Sonora, are economically better off today and will continue to be better off because of free trade. There is no doubt about it. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, exports from Mexico to the United States have significantly increased since the mid-1990s. Exports of meat products, vegetables, wine, spirits, beer, soft drinks, clothing are all at significantly higher levels than they were just a few years ago.
The same goes for exports of building products, steel, electrical generators, industrial engines, telecommunications equipment, automobiles and computers. All of these items and many other high-end products that hadn't found a mature market in Mexico before NAFTA are now being sold from Mexico at higher levels than ever before.
NAFTA not only opened an unrestricted trade flow, it leveled the playing field, benefiting all partners.

I say we send everything we out source to china to mexico, then free trade. This would help the Mexican economy (read...no border jumpers), and it will mess up china. sounds like a win win.

I say we scrap all the trade deals and re-negotiate. Droping Nafta and Most Favored Trade Nation with China would level the playing field quite a bit. Why John McCain is a NAFTA love is because it benefitted Arizona quite well.
Jesus christ im sick of this political shit in the free 4 all we need a new wanker forum.

you're inconsistent. why were you a ron paul supporter? there is a group of people who want to guard the freedoms that you want and deny the freedoms that you don't want. they're leftists, not libertarians.
regarding your preferred policy on trade, would you explain this to me:

also, who is going to do these jobs? the unemployment rate is something like 4.8% last i saw, and we're possibly in a recession. historically, thats a low rate, below what was formerly regarded as the natural rate. so you want America to produce all that it consumes? that would result in higher prices (caused by an excess of demand above the limited supply capacity of the economy), lower quality (due to reduced competition), and lowered standards of living (as a result foregoing the benefits of comparative advantage, which would lead to lower consumption given the same amount of resource inputs). by abrogating our freedoms, you will make us, as a society, better off in which way exactly?

if you educated yourself, even a little, about the fundamental basis of the platform that the man you enthusiastically support to be president adheres to, then what i said would make sense to you and you would understand why i said you are inconsistent.

ron paul is for free trade...nafta is a fair trade program...i dont have to agree 100% with his policy to be a supporter...i dont completely agree with his foreign policy either....Jeez.
I like the idea of free trade, but i still think they should bring those jobs back to the US...that is all. You dont have to be so one-sided you know....
