It looks like Canon just released a new IS lens with a 55-250 zoom range. Best buy lists the lens at $350 on sale for $320 right now. Seems like this would be a great lens for those looking for a somewhat telephoto as well as IS. Anybody know anything else about this lens or where to get more info other than the info on the Canon site?

I just found it on Newegg for $260.99 with 3 day free shipping. VERY tempting.

it's not going to be a quality lens. it'll be right there with the 70-300 IS. it seems the only telephoto lenses canon makes that are worth a shit are the L lenses.

the 70-200 f4 non-is can usually be found for around $500. that one's lens 3 on my list of stuff i want behind a 28/f1.8 and the ef-s 60mm macro.

Being an amateur just getting into photography, it looks like this would be good deal then. The 70-300 IS is about what, $700? For a lot less, I can get a fairly similar lens to get some telephoto reach. The only differences I see so far are the zoom and the fact the 55-250 IS doesn't have USM.

depends on what you're shooting i guess. image quality is probably gonna be on par with the kit lens, maybe a little better. if you just need a longer lens, then sure, this would be an ok way to go. you're going to be hard pressed to find another lens with that kind of reach for that price. just don't expect build and image quality to be much more than the kit lens.

the thing looks like garbage and, quite frankly, the price tag scares me. I'd save a few more dollars and get a 70-200 f/4L. at least you know the L will hold its value if you decide to ditch it. the 250 thing, whatever it is, will not.

especially because it's an ef-s. i've noticed prices have been dropping on those pretty consistently over the last few months. good for me, since i was able to get one dirt cheap barely used, bad for you if you get one new. even the 60mm macro's retail price has dropped by almost half since it came out.
Like Bobby said, the price should scare you. Its not as good of a deal as you think it is when you first look at it. I have a reallt nice telephoto(its muh baybay!) Nikkor 80-200 1:2.8 d

fuck that, you can get a 70-200 f/4L for around $550 or a 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS/USM for around the same price, steer clear of the 75-300, they suck ass
or if you can find one used, a 80-200 f/2.8L for around the same price. Its an awesome lense, but older non-usm focusing that is a little slower

canon made this to compete with nikons own 55-200 VR

Plus, this is a EF-S lens, I think its kind of pointless to buy EF-S lenses, you can only use them on the lower end cameras

if he had the money for a 5d, do you think he'd honestly be asking about that lens?

I dont have money for a 5d either, but have been buying lenses with the intent on some day hopefully being able to use them on a full frame camera
the day will likely come when we have an entry level FF camera, in which case all these EF-S lenses will be useless
There are plenty of good affordable lenses out there in EF format to make it pointless to buy ANY EF-S lens. This is all my opinion of course.
I also have a feeling that once the 5dii (or whatever they will call it), the prices on 5d's are gonna drop like a rock, and im gonna pick one up, or some day get a 1dsii or something

What does USM mean?

ultrasonic motor. it makes for faster and quieter focusing. Its not gear driven.
