View Full Version : What protection do you use?

Reading through some of the old posts on the forums, noticed some saying they don't use any AV software on their computers.
I went without an AV or protection on my computer for a long time (many months) but decided to install Kaspersky about a week ago, uninstalled it today because it used too many resources and seemed to slow down my internet connection.
Now I'm looking for some basic protection, ie. spyware, but not sure what programs to use. Already downloaded Spybot S&D, is there any thing else I should have?

I have a 64 random key encryption and wpa2, I use firefox with java and JS disabled unless I need them and I trust the site. I run very few downloaded programs, and always on a test box that I tcp scan and observe running to make sure it isn't trojaned.
With a few very basic steps, theres no need to waste resources on a virus scanner.
But on my laptop I uase mcafe maximum protection - the virus scanner is useless, but if you run malware of any type, the maximum protection part basically makes the windows, system32, program files, and root read only so that it can only do so much damage. It also makes services read only and doesn't allow new services to be registered or ran.
good sense

Joe and John speak the truth.
ClamAV is a good one to look into if you're interested in a lightweight form of virus protection though.
Notlad is pretty heavy on security in my opinion, but I know a couple guys here at work that also disable JS (asks for permission every single time). I just try to limit my wanderlust when in a web browser. : )

after spending a few months in this forum with you guys, I think my security is on the light side.

I have AVG and AdAware installed but I only run them once a month at most on my laptop. I haven't had a virus since high school... possibly middle school.

Avira and HijackThis. Probably wouldn't use anything if my sister didn't use this machine every now and then.

AVG free edition. I have it on my older Desktop, had it for three years, never had any problems. I have it on my new laptop, haven't had any problems yet. Im under the firewall on my parents reuter though, and when I start going to USF they have all kinds of blocked stuff, so i won't run into anything there either.

Oh, I forgot to mention I run WinPatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) on all of my computers. :)

A firewall means nothing if it's not setup correctly and you have no idea what you (the user) are doing. I'm not saying you don't but don't think that because you have a hardware firewall you're immune. ;)

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.2.0.276 and common sense visiting sites on the internet. Being careful of what I'm choosing to download, staying away from sites with shitloads of popups or using obscure ActiveX plugins, etc...

Yea, i wasnt saying I was immune, just saying that AVG with my firewall works fine. I have gotten a few viruses, I actually got 3 trojans right in a row one day, but AVG got rid of them for me. Pretty good program, especially for a free one.
running AVG for a couple of years now....no issues
best protection is Firefox with NoScript plugin.
all the virus programs you buy are useless, 100% useless. if you need a virus scanner get the free ones.
I add AVG Free and ClamWin32 to that aswell (if its not my machine). Also Spybot S&D just to check and to get rid of the tracking cookie crap.
Most malware is delivered through unpatched browser exploits (ones that are known and not patched) or through unknown browser expliots, or from mostly, javascript.
Javascript is how 90% of themalware gets on systems, you can browse to a site that has been hit with XSS or just plain cracked and had JS installed and it can install things on your system.
Install FF, add no script and only trust the domain of the site you are going too, or ones you know.
