No cologne/perfume. Just their natural scent. I will just sniff my bf haha.

I read an interesting article on this recently..

The article itself is long... but a good read.

Cliffs:

Research has shown that we use scent-based signaling mechanisms to suss out compatibility. Claus Wedekind, a biologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, created Exhibit A of this evidence by giving 44 men new T-shirts and instructing them to wear the shirts for two straight nights. To ensure that the sweat collecting on the shirts would remain "odor-neutral," he supplied the men with scent-free soap and aftershave.

After the men were allowed to change, 49 women sniffed the shirts and specified which odors they found most attractive. Far more often than chance would predict, the women preferred the smell of T-shirts worn by men who were immunologically dissimilar to them.

When we disregard what our noses tell us, we can find ourselves mired in partnerships that breed sexual discontent, infertility, and even—in extreme cases—unhealthy offspring.

So we can subtly pick up through scent.. a person biologically dissimilar to ourselves. And the more differences in the gene pool.. the healthier the offspring... pretty interesting.. how scent can come into play.

The only natural scent a person omits would be body odor.

soaps and things of that nature are what I like to smell.

I love a guy's natural smell, so yeah, I totally agree with the article that scent and pheromones play a huge part in attracting the opposite sex.

mmm pheromones. He has a very distinct smell (body odor if you will) and I love laying in bed and smelling it. Especially when he isn't in bed with me and I can still smell it.

I dont know too much about natural smell. I am addicted to quite a few perfumes, especially one I just recently smelled that made me fuckin melt. I regret not asking what it was she was wearing, maybe a simple text will solve this problem.

I don't know what it is, she just has a smell. Our bed used to smell like her. It was the only way I could sleep. I've since then got her perfume and tried that thinking maybe that's what it was, but it isn't. It helped, sort of, but it wasn't the same.
So yeah, I agree, if you are really connected with your S.O., then you know the way he/she smells.

I'll admit to smelling Jeff's shirs when I get the laundry ready. He wears them once and then throws them in the hamper, so it's not like it's a few days worth of B.O. but I like the man smell very much :)

i never understood that whole "natural smell" thing.

i lotion up within 10-20 min out of the shower and put on perfume before i leave the house so i always smell like shampoo/body wash, lotion, and/or perfume.

the only thing on him that i smell, other than the amazingness that is his cologne  , is if his deodorant stops working and i get a whiff of smelly pit. that doesn't happen that often though but seeing as i snuggle up in his armpit/side when we go to bed, if his pit smells i have to cover it with the pillow

ding ding. I actually wrote my sophmore thesis on human pheremones. I don't want to rewrite it, but the short version IMHO is that humans do use them, just not the way animals do.

People do not actually smell pheromones tho. Our 5 senses have a conscious cognitive response. You smell something and you know the smell, you hear something and you know the sound, you see something and you know what you saw...etc. The vomero nasal organ detects pheromones, which has separate and distinct chemoreceptors. There is nothing concrete you can associate it with, rather it makes you feel something that you cannot quite put your finger on.

Animals cannot speak like we can so they cannot communicate the way we do. They can tell by pheromones when another animal wants to mate, wants to hurt them, will be friendly, is challenging them... Not by anything said, but by the pheromones; by what they feel.

Humans are much more developed and human females are in heat year round so we do not need it necessarily to tell when we can mate for the survival of our species. We can speak, so we do not necessarily need to know when another human is mad, friendly...etc. The human VNO has shrunk considerably and was thought to be a vestigial organ until the last 20 years or so.

I read some experiments trying to prove it exists and is still in some use. There was a doctors office, and they put pheromones (i think it was from male sweat during arousal) on a chair. Females came in the office and gravitated towards the chair, guys avoided it. Not something they could cognitively smell, but something that made them choose or avoid a certain chair that was just like the rest. They put it on pictures of twins and showed them to women and overwhelmingly the women chose the pheromone laced picture as the better looking twin, even when they switched the pictures.

Anyway, there is lots of older science that says that humans do not use pheromones, but I agree with some of the newer research; we just don't rely on it as much and therefore do not know really how to use it. BTW, that is also why alpha males in all species, including humans, but heads. Nothing has to be said, but any of you guys out there that considers yourself an alpha has been someplace where a guy has come up and the dude makes that fight or flight start pumping through your body, even though half a dozen others have done the same thing and you did not feel a thing.

So when you like the way your SO smells, is it really the smell or that you get a really pleasant feeling from smelling them?

THIS. I'll spend an extra few minutes in bed after he's gone for the day just to keep smelling him.

I am not above stealing shirts just so I can smell him when he's not there. :gordy:

So when you like the way your SO smells, is it really the smell or that you get a really pleasant feeling from smelling them?

Both? Methinks an agreeable smell would give a pleasant feeling. Smell is also closely tied to memory, so the smell could evoke good memories that bring good feelings.

Never noticed honestly. I have dated a redhead before, and that being said waking up next to her all the time never made me think of what you just described.

Being that we are on smell... The last time I was at Mons, Renee gave me a lapdance and I had to smell stripper on me even when I got home and went to bed. I was really really really pissed off,

that I was alone and drunk

no, not stalker style...
Its hard to explain. I would toss and turn in my bed looking for her. After spending the previous 3 years with her next to me, it was a hard thing to get used to sleeping by myself. I tried the whole body pillow thing, but that wasn't cutting it... I found a bottle of her perfume, so I figured I'd give it a try. She wore it all the time, so i thought maybe it would help with the whole restless thing...

That's what I was trying to get at with the whole perfume thing.
I thought it was the actual smell of her that I was missing and why I couldn't sleep, when it was really the feeling that I was missing....
