I want to record some movies onto dvd to watch on a dvd player. What kind of DVD should I buy? Does it matter if I use the program that came with the computer or should I "obtain" a better program?
Anything else I should know?
I usually just watch shit on my xbox but location is an issue for this one.

Depends, what you trying to do.
Rip a DVD and copy to a blank DVD?
Or just make some movie files play on a dvd player?
A really simple program to use is ConvertXtoDVD...converts any video file to DVD format and has customizable menus.
DVD movies will either be on DVD5 (4.7GB) or DVD9 (Dual Layer 8.5GB) mediums. Buy some of both.
Anything over 4.7GB will need to go on a DVD9 disc. Everything else can go on a 4.7GB disc.
If you want to copy DVD's:
Download RipIt4Me and DVD Decrypter and install both. Use RipIt4Me to rip movies to an ISO file, then burn the resulting ISO to the appropriate format of DVD Disc.
edit: PSA: This is only for dvd's you've legitimately paid for, of course :P
This is the SIMPLEST way to do it.

ConvertXtoDVD is awesome.
I paid for my copy, and don't regret it at all. The french accented English chick that talks to me is great too.

I go with DVD-R.

Some will argue +R is the better standard, but most devices play back both with ease. Don't sweat it.
only matters when you're looking at what you can burn and what your dvd player will read. most newer dvd burners do both + and - ..... same for newer dvd players
