girlfriend's laptop decided to drop a duece...that duece being the onboard soundcard. Its a Dynabook (japanese branded toshiba). No sound comes out AT ALL from the built in speakers and the audio out jack makes horrible screeching noises when you plug headphones into it. Now she took it to the Gay Squad at Best buy and they too think its the soundcard and told her 200 bucks + labor...so she said fuck that. They did however tell her to that a USB external speaker setup would work. Now im not entirely adept in this stuff but would this have the screeching problem or would it bypass the soundcard and route straight to the speakers?

Thanks

It depends on where the problem is. You don't have any 'cards' in that laptop, its onboard sound. On the mobo. However USB speakers do not require a sound card to function. So, no, not necessarily.

USB speakers have their own sound circuitry.. they bypass your on board sound card all together.
