How many of you here are smokers and managed to quit successfully? I am trying but its driving me up the walls. Is there anything any of you have done that helped?

lol. I have been. I made it 2 hours this morning without one.

GF and I are having a baby so quitting is at the top of the priority list for health and financial reasons. I just need some advice on quitting. Nothing has worked so far and going without altogher(cold turkey) makes me mean as hell.

Wait till you get sick and cant smoke for a few days. Then quit all together. Thats what I did and I smoked for about 9 years, pack a day. Still love my drunk cigarettes though.

I still smoke from time to time.

Was buying cartoons back in 2001/2002.

+1 on the getting sick and just forgetting about it. Lots of chewing gum, and rubber bands to keep your hands busy.

If you want to quit you will. If you don't want to quit it isn't going to happen.

Every time you want to pick up a cigerette, take a drink of whiskey. Guarenteed that you'll stop smoking one way or another

I quit smoking a couple of months ago. The best way to quit is to just do it. I still have a cigar every now and then, but I have to remind myself not to make it a habit again.

All good advice. Thanks guys.

Drinking isnt going to help though BAMF, as much as I would like to use your method, I dont think my boss would approve and I tend to smoke like ten times more when Im drinking. lol

All you quitters in here... How long did it take for the cravings to go away? Ive gone about 3 days before without having one but it seems like I get more agitated, anxious, and I feel like everything happens really fast.

I was a pack a day for 3 years. Swore to everyone I was not addicted. One day I said I was going to quit. That was in January, I am still off the cigs.

Method: Cold turkey.

Start running.. it'll make you realize how bad the smoking is affecting your lungs.

My sister-in-law's mom stopped smoking in the AM, and only did it at night. It took away from that habit forming morning smoke. She also didn't allow herself to bring cigarettes in the car with her (another habit forming action). She slowly started weaning herself off of them.

I think it's great you're trying to stop for the health of the baby. Good luck.

Ive heard that if you drop one cigarette per week from your daily average its not too bad. If you smoke 20 a day you should quit in 20 weeks.

did cold turkey and made it 2.5 years, wasn't really feeling the willpower to quit again so got chantix and have been 5 weeks without one. Played pool the other night and didn't even have a desire to light up

Quit cold turkey 6 years ago. Bought a new pack of Camel Turkish Jades. Unwrapped em. Realized how fucking stupid and pointless smoking was and gave the pack to my buddy. Havent touched a cig since. Mind you prior to quitting i smoked 2 packs a day

it doesn't agree with everyone, I did have one friend who suffered some of the depression issues and had to stop. I weighed the cost of smoking against the cost of the chantix and it's obviously better in the long run. I just stopped cared about smoking, there wasn't really much of the whole my god I'm quitting panic feeling that makes you want one. My only real temptation was when my bike busted but it turned out to be an easy fix

Dude, I was the exact same way. I could stop and not really have any nasty effects until about day 3. Once that hit I felt like I would do just about anything for a pack of smokes. I'd been smoking since I was almost 19 years old, so right around 10 years. I smoked half a pack a day for the longest time, but after a nasty breakup it managed up to a pack a day and stayed there.

It took me several attempts to stop smoking, and in the end, It just had to be the right time for me to quit.

The cravings never fully go away, they just get easier to ignore and go away after about 30 seconds now. However, now and then I will get a really bad one which lasts for several minutes, and can feel like it lasts an hour. It's rough at first, but after you make that decision to say "No." it becomes easier to handle.

I had to go cold turkey to get through it. The patch, the gum, cutting down, all did not work for me. I can't even remember how many times I tried to quit, but I did, and I'm doing great at keeping it that way.

Good luck, and remember that if you aren't able to quit this attempt, it's just another step in the process of _actually_ quitting. So don't let it get you down.

Another part that helped me a lot was reading on the internet about how other people did it. I searched google for quitting smoking, and nicotine withdrawals. It led me to many interesting blog posts, forum posts, and articles noting how others have combated the addiction.

Remember that everyone is different. What works for one person may not work for you. I would try everything in your arsenal to quit. Most of all, do not get discouraged if you don't make it this time, or the next as long as you keep trying, you _will_ make it through it.

If you do a lot of reading on the withdrawal symptoms, you will be prepared for what you're in store for, and it will make things much easier to handle.

The facts on smoking are disturbing and indicate that smoking has a devastating effect on the body.

No doubt....i smoked for years and just decided to quit..for no reason. If you have a 'reason' your mind will fight it......(new years res!)

I don't even believe you are "addicted", it's totally mental, you get used to it you love it it comforts you. It kills time, it's a converstation waiting to happen. Your brain is afraid to give all that up for some reason.

When i used to say i'm going to stop....i'd have the urge to light up and would. Wierd how that happens.....

They say the only way to stop and stay stopped is cold turkey!

I quit 7yrs ago .....Just decided I was done smoking and wanted to quit; so I put a nicotine patch on which made me SO sick I thought I was going to die. I quit on the spot that day and didn't touch a cigarette until Feb of this year.

As of yesterday I decided to quit again. Gonna try the gum if I need it....

I've never understood a person's addiction to smoking. When I was younger, I would smoke every now and then socially but was never "addicted." I could put them down at any time and I never really felt like I needed them. So, it's hard for me to understand when people say it's hard to quit. Just don't do it.

Thats pretty ignorant to say. I used to think the exact same way. I would smoke every once in awhile, usually at the pool hall with friends and whatnot. I enjoyed it and I didnt feel like I needed to smoke. I just wanted to. That was about 3 years ago. Now, if I go for more than 3 hours without a cigarette I get extremely anxious and irritable. The smallest things put me in an almost uncontrollable rage.

If you consciously try to quit and you end up at a convenience store with the cigarettes at checkout, its extremely difficult just to not buy any. You wouldnt understand because your not an actual smoker and Im not going to tell you to go smoke a pack and a half a day for a year and then try to quit so you will understand how it feels because thats idiotic.

Again, you dont understand because your not in the same situation. Your argument is completely invalid.

Maybe you could lift more than a girl...

(exhibit a)
According to a 1 rep max calculator.

Squat = 193 (Shhh, skinny guy with turkey legs here)
Bench = 180
Dead Lift = 302
Total = 675

Is this good or bad? I only weight between 138-148. Fluctuates. These are numbers taken from the last time I worked out. Its been about 6 months ago.
...if you were man enough to quit being so weak and just stop lighting up. :)

Okay then how bout this, i smoked for 15yrs...(14yrs old ..) never more than 1 pack a day unless we were partying or driving to Fla from PA....
I just got tired of wasting money to kill myself so i crushed the rest of my pack and tossed them in the trash. That was 4yrs ago i think.... I wasn't all pussy smoking lights either full blown Reds. Simple fact is if you WANT to quit you CAN. If you don't want to quit you make EXCUSES of why you CAN'T quit.
You just sound angry because you aren't strong enough mentally to handle this so said "addiction" (mental addiction not phy by the way).

now i'm not putting you down smoke if you want to but stop all this i can't shit.......if you want to just stop. Add up the money you waste on them and you may see yourself smoke free fast.
