My grass has been decent since I moved in, but this last year it has gone to hell. I'm trying to keep the neighbors weeds out and so forth , but two main plants have killed a LOT of my lawn. I spent three days just clearing the front yard of some clover vine crap that luckily hasn't came back..

here are my two culprits that I cannot find any info on .. what it is and what to do with it..

the first is a low lying broad leaf plant with almost not roots , it is thick and moves quick killing the grass... weed killer works on it in a few days but it always comes back twice as pissed off as before I kill it.. I can pull it out, and I have , but I have nothing but sand left!!

the next is a vine type , super thin blades, very light green in color. has pretty deep roots that run straight down.. It also chokes out the grass somehow.

you can see in the pics how much grass I have left from this stuff... NONE!

here is how it vines

here is a patch in the middle of the backyard.. you can see the difference from the other grass I have. Its lighter and thinner. The dead areas around it is where I've pulled it out already.

that "vine" is a type of bermuda grass. Kill it with an herbicide specifically for killing Bermuda and grasses that spread by rhizomes (the viney part under ground), make sure it is okay for Bahia. Metal rake your yard after getting rid of the unwanted grasses. Since winter is coming, go get enough Rye grass seed for your yard and do plant it. In 3 weeks it will make your lawn "uniform". *be forewarned, rye grows QUICKLY, if you despise mowing I would hold off till after winter. After winter get some bahia seed and sow that in after the rye dies out and youll be set. If you weed your yard out NOW though, you will need to keep doing so until you can get grass seed on the ground.

You know, if you would've left them the fuck alone you'd have a nice thick green yard. I'm just sayin' - I look out across my backyard and see all kinds of shit like that. But its green, not all patchy and muddy.

That's what I thought for a little bit, then I got sick of my "grass" disappearing.

 BAMF has a point. If you wanted to you could plant the whole thing in bermuda, like the shit that is growing now, and it will nice and thick like soccer field.

Thanks! I do not despise mowing, its not much of a yard, and I have a push and rider. Is it best to put a herbicide down? Or could I pull it all out? I heard that sometimes pulling it out can cause it to spread more.

Does the type of bahia matter ? I don't know if it is the pensacola or argentine.

What brand rye would you recommend ?

herbicide, you wont pull it ALL. itll break off under ground and youll have accomplished nothing when it comes back. ;)

Get whatever bahia seed you want, i think pensecola is the best for hardiness and all that, but youd have to read more about it.

As for rye, see what your local seed companies have in stock. Tell them what you want to do with it if they have more than one type. You are just looking for ground cover for this fall/winter, its an annual grass so it needs to be replanted every year. Just look for "seed" in the directories. I bought the only kind they offered here at this seed place. BTW, 50lbs of Rye is like $20-40, cant remember, but buy 50lbs at Home Depot and see how much it is

I'm going to get on this this weekend hopefully. . my front yard is decent.. but that bermuda grass is showing up out there.. it hurts that we have several abandoned houses on our street with shitty lawns.. grass about 3' tall on a couple of them!!.. Their crap is migrating all over the place this last year.

Thanks for the help again. appreciate it !

nobody had the bermuda grass killer in stock..

I might just let it grow. It moves quicker than the bahia and is covering where the bahia never wanted to go..
