Tampa: A Photographic History
I thought this may be something that I can keep adding to that y'all may be interested in.
Tampa's Maas Brothers Department Store...which was unfortunately demolished this year to make way for yet another condo tower development. Here is a little history. Maas Brothers was a Tampa, Florida department store founded by German immigrants Abe and Isaac Maas in 1886 as the Dry Goods Palace. Abe Maas opened the Dry Goods Palace on December 10, 1886. Isaac formally joined his brother on September 15, 1887 and the store became Maas Brothers. After outgrowing its first two locations, Maas Brothers opened its third and largest store in 1921. By 1929, Maas Brothers dominated Florida's West Coast, when it was acquired by Hahn Department Stores in 1929 (reorganized as Allied Stores Corp. in 1935). In 1948, Maas Brothers opened its first full line branch store in downtown St Petersburg. Other branch stores opened in downtown Lakeland in 1954, downtown Sarasota in 1956 and downtown Clearwater in 1961. Maas Brothers opened its first mall store in 1965 in the Edison Mall. By 1981 Maas Brothers opened its 17th store in Gulfview Square Mall in Port Richey. This was the last Maas Brothers store built. In 1985, Maas Brothers absorbed the Savannah, Georgia based stores of fellow Allied nameplate Levy's of Savannah (founded in 1871 as B H Levy & Bro.). After the takeover of Allied by Campeau in 1986, Maas Brothers was consolidated with the weaker Jordan Marsh Florida franchise on Florida's East Coast in 1987 (Allied's Jordan Marsh had expanded from New England in 1956, later forming a separate Allied division). The plan was that the stronger Maas Brothers would help the weaker Jordan Marsh. This brought the total number of combined stores to 39 throughout Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. In 1989 the official store name was changed to Maas Brothers/Jordan Marsh. In 1988 Campeau completed its ultimately disastrous follow-up takeover of Federated Department Stores, at which point Maas Brothers and Federated's stronger Florida chain, Miami-based Burdines, began to share some operating functions. On January 16, 1990, after struggling under huge debt payments from the takovers, Federated and Allied filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 1991 after Allied and Federated were formally merged into the 'new' Federated in bankruptcy court, Maas Brothers/Jordan Marsh Florida was folded into Burdines and its Tampa headquarters shuttered. After sitting empty for 15 years the flagship downtown Tampa Maas Brothers store was demolished in March 2006. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

A Photographic Collected Anthology of Tampa History
Today, I am focusing on what Ballast Point used to look like. At one time as short a time ago as my grandmothers childhood (1920s/30s) you could take a trolley ride to this well manicured and maintained park complex...a far cry from the fishing pier complex found there today. A point of interest in 1933 it cost a nickel to ride round trip from Port Tampa to Ballast Point on the trolley.

Some more history:
1850 Cattle trade has become a major shipping business in Tampa. Ballast Point is used as the docking area for large, heavy draft ships. Only shallow draft steamers and small sailing vessels can reach the wharf on Whiting Street in Tampa. 1892 Electric streetcar service linked downtown Tampa, Ybor City, West Tampa and Ballast Point. 1896 Captain John Herbert Peck of Tampa is hired to assist in piloting the tug through the Florida Keys and Cuban waterways. The Three Friends stops at Ballast Point to pick up ammunition, supplies, and men for a trip to Cuba. Link to FL Historical Market The dirty fish monger park that is there now, is but a sad testament to what was once a terrific local and tourist attraction at the end of the trolley line. Here is a better view. ![]() Genre Black-and-white photographs Location Depicted Florida--Hillsborough County--Ballast Point; Date of Original 1911; Publisher Burgert Brothers Place of Publication Tampa (Fla.)
