Daily Dose of Tampa History - Street Cars
Today I thought we would take a look at some of the street cars from years gone by. It certainly creates an interesting for our multi-million dollar street car system that we have in place between Ybor and DT.

They are under the existing roads. Tampa's street car system ran as far out as Sulfur Springs. They were all removed in 1949 to make room for progress in the form of expanded highway systems utilized by people moving to suburbs. Much of the trackwork can still be seen down town, though most everywhere else they were paved over. A line used to run down the center medians of Bayshore Blvd, but all vestiges of it were removed in the late 70's and early 80's culminating in Mayor Sandy Freeman's renovation of Bayshore.

Daily Dose of Tampa History: 10/08/06 Hillsborough High School

Physical descrip: 1 photonegative : b&w ; 4 x 5 in. Series Title: (General collection) ![]() Corporate Author: Burgert Bros. Title: [Hillsborough High School : Tampa, Florida] [graphic] Publication info: 1928. Physical descrip: 1 photograph : b&w ; 8 x 10 in. Hillsborough High School was established in 1885 on Franklin St., in a very small building. General class size was 19 students with 1 teacher. After several relocations, Hillsborough moved to its current location (5000 North Central Avenue, 33603) in 1927. Hillsborough's exterior is known to be one of the most beautiful and historic in the Seminole Heights region of Tampa, Florida. Its capacity was said to be over 2,000 students. Many alumni of Hillsborough have found success in their lives as politicians, artists, scientists, and, perhaps most notably, as athletes (see below). Revisiting the school is very much a nostalgic experience for alumni, and most alumni find themselves returning to HHS on occasion after graduation. Renovation and Addition In the 1980s, the Alumni Building, commonly referred to as the 400 Hall, was added to the school. In around 1995, another addition was made, the 500 Building/English Hall, in which most 10th grade homerooms and English classes are housed at this time. The school is now finishing up renovations to make the building look like it did as of 1960 and before. However, this caused students to learn in portable classrooms for much of 2005. Renovation is said to be finishing Phase 3 and is scheduled to be complete by the end of the 2005-06 term. Major improvements from the renovation include removing the tiling, and restoring the wood floors throughout all of the original building's classrooms, building a new gym, fully refurbishing all music rooms, installing centralized air-conditioning in all rooms, as well as extensive re-wiring (behind the walls), and restoring the ceilings to their original height (in all classrooms, hallways, and the cafeteria). One unintended consequence of raising the ceilings to their original height is now sound travels much more easily, and when one walks on an upper floor, sounds like a "herd of elephants" are heard in the room immediately below. Other minor changes include new student and teacher desks, shelving (or lack thereof) for teachers, refurbished restrooms, and recoated hallway floors. Recent/Ongoing Rennovation The renovation of Hillsborough High School during the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 school years focused primarily in Area 100 (the original buildings). The construction consisted of restoration, replacement, renovations, upgrading, intsallation and electrical renovations, such as new lighting, restoration of the original hardwood floors in all possible classrooms, and reverting back to the tall ceilings from before the 1980s. The construction was 80-90% finished by January 2006, and is nearly finished. The JROTC/Science hall is still under renovation, as well as the Gym, which is currently condemned. Senior Pranks 1966 - Several graduating seniors released briefcases full of fiddler crabs at the back of the auditorium during one of the final assemblies of the year. Waves of students screamed and jumped from their seats as the crabs scuttled underneath them, heading for the stage. 1990- taking the "chief's head" of rival school (Chamberlain) and throwing it into the Hillsborough River 1994- Two groups pulled simultaneous pranks. One group placed a banner of a terrier over Rival's Chief Head, while the other group burned "HHS" into the rival school's football field and spray painted the same all over the school. 1997- Placed a banner of a terrier over Rival's Chief Head. 2002- Switching License plates among cars in the junior parking lot. A giant "02" (the graduation year of the senior class), was formed with the license plates to mock the juniors who were the class of '03. Interesting or Unusual Facts * In Winter of 2000, the Disney Television Channel filmed their show, "The Jersey," on HHS's campus. Students were confused about the random appearances of posters that said, "Go Ducks!" Due to this confusion (the mascot is the Terrier), students were told via the intercom not to tear down the posters and disregard other 'unusual' items. * During the midst of the Bush administration's Iraq invasion, a group spray-painted "NO WAR" at various locations on the campus. Most notable were the steps by which many students entered every morning from the buses and senior parking lot. It failed to inspire much controversy among students. Although there are several local gangs in the surrounding area, few (if any) have ever vandalized the school with graffiti. |

Daily Dose of Tampa History - The Tampa Terrace Hotel (10/20/06)
Today, I am taking a look at what was one of the premier hotels on the gulf coast and by many accounts the nicest hotel in all of Tampa; The Tampa Terrace Hotel. I grew up hearing stories from my grand parents about balls that were hosted here, and the fabulous marble floors that ran througout. At one point not depicted in these photos there were also hanging gardens and vines which adorned the exterior hanging down from the terraces. It was a sad day when this regal beauty was leveled to make room for a bank and a parking lot. Sadly, this is gone but the fugly Floridian still stands.

Daily Dose of Tampa History - Busch Gardens
Today, I thought I would take a look at something a little more modern, but a place that has changed greatly in my lifetime alone. (1981-2006). Of particular interest to me since my grandfather was one of the chief structural engineers responsible for the design of the park in the late 60's BG is certainly a well entrenched part of Tampa Bay culture. Who else remembers the old onsite brewery, or the monorail?

Pugh is a zoo keeper for the zoo located just east of Pensacola. Mr. Zoogood was just recently purchased from Busch Gardens (Tampa) and Pugh must care for the chimpanzee at his trailer home to maintain the every-six-hour feeding schedule and diaper changes, etc. The 8 lbs. "infant" will grow to four feet tall and should weigh approximately 130 lbs by the time he becomes an adult.
