Daily Dose of Tampa History - Davis Island
Today I thought I would take a look at Davis Island, man made luxury living at its Tampa historical finest.
Davis Island was built upon two man made islands atop two small natural islands formerly known as "Little Grassy Key" and "Big Grassy Key" at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. The islands were built up from mud dredged from the bottom of Tampa Bay in the 1920's and expanded. This dredge and fill operation was undertaken at the height of the Florida Land Boom by developer and Tampa native D. P. Davis. Many of the original Mediterranean structures are still standing, and have received national Historic Designation, as well as local protections. Buildings of note include the Palace of Florence and Mirasol. Today Davis Island is a mix of residential and retail areas. Davis Island is also home to Peter O. Knight Airport, Davis Island Yacht Club, and Tampa General Hospital. Also on the Islands are the Marjorie Park Municipal Yacht Basin & Marjorie Park at 115 Columbia Drive and the Seaplane Basin just South of the Airport. Marjorie Park was donated to the City of Tampa and named by Davis after his wife Marjorie Merritt Davis. Nearly all streets on the island are named after bodies of water or islands. They are loosely arranged in alphabetical order starting with Adalia Ave. (the first street crossed after arriving on the island from the only bridge that connects it to the mainland) and ending with Severn Ave., the street farthest away from the bridge that leads to the main island's southernmost point, on which the Davis Island Yacht Club is situated. ![]() Title: [Advertisement for Davis Island : Tampa, Florida] [graphic] Publication info: 192-. Daily Dose of Tampa History - Tony Jannus (1st Commercial Airline Flight)
Tony Jannus (1889-1916), born Antony Habersack Jannus, was an early American pilot who conducted the world's first scheduled commercial airline flight on January 1, 1914. The 23 minute flight traveled between St. Petersburg, Florida and Tampa, Florida, passing some 50 feet above Tampa Bay in Jannus' Benoist biplane seaplane. Ex-mayor Abram C. Pheil, was the first passenger, having paid $400 at an auction for the privilege. The flight was the first scheduled of the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line.
Jannus was killed on October 12, 1916 when his plane (a Curtiss H-7 he was testing for the Russians) had engine problems and crashed into the Black Sea. His body was never recovered. ![]() Title: [Photocollage of airline related materials : Saint Petersburg, Florida] [graphic] Publication info: 19--. Physical descrip: 1 photoprint b&w 8 x 10 in. Daily Dose of Tampa History - Curtis Hixon Convention Center
Today, I thought that I would take a look at Tampa's first convention center, The Curtis Hixon. Amazingly, I remember this structure, and attending "Sesame Street Live" there with my grandmother around 1985 or 86.
