AARP, American Cancer Soc. & American Medical Assn support House healthcare bill

Quote:
Reporting from Washington - As House Democrats prepare to vote Saturday on a sweeping bill to overhaul the nation's healthcare system, they have picked up an important endorsement today from the 40-million-member AARP, the nation's largest senior citizens group.

The AARP's backing counters mounting opposition among employer groups who are stepping up their advertising campaign against the House Democratic bill. And it comes on a day when other influential groups are swinging their weight behind the healthcare legislation.

On Tuesday, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network announced its endorsement of the House bill. The American Medical Assn., the nation's largest doctors group, is planning an announcement at 10 a.m. Pacific time.

AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond said today that the group saw the House Democratic bill as the most promising proposal.

The AMA is like 20% or something of practicing physicians, woohoO!

Not quite the 2/3 of our government that should be required to re-write the Constitution for this thing.

The AMA, and other trade groups do not necessarily represent the actual opinions of their members. In particular in trade industries where membership in those groups are either a good idea (for example access to resources that improve your work performance), or are required (like labor unions).

AARP is similar, being a member gives you access to discounts, so a member of AARP might complain to the leadership, but may not be at a high enough level for them to leave the organization.

A good example of this, most police groups are anti-gun, but overwhelmingly most police officers are pro-gun, or at least indifferent to gun rights.

You are reading more into it then I wrote. I simply said that don't take an endorsement from a group to be representative of it's members. That goes for all group, I'm a NRA member, and I disagree with some of the stuff that they do.

You know if you hadn't post that I wouldn't have noticed, but since you did mention it. It's been fixed.

Because I generally ask them, and they edit it (when I spot it, or someone else points it out). I know it's pointless to ask with you.

As you see I rarely notice unless I click the link for some reason, or the quoted section is extremely long.

A source close to the AMA said its internal polling has shown doctors to be closely divided on a public option and health care reform proposed by Democrats but 20 percent or more of doctors across the country are also undecided on what to support.
So a good 40% of Doctors support the measure... Whoohoo! That's a real overwhelming majority.

And now you know, the rest of the story.

So the minority of a group that joins the interest group is indicative of the whole? Also, ask the AARP how pleased their membership base is with them after the whole "prescription drug plan" debacle.

Do yourself a favor since you like political threads, get educated. Go to USF, they have a fantastic Political Science department. I know, I graduated from it. Make sure to take Dr. Tauber's Political Parties and Interest Groups class, you might learn something.

this is absolutely true, millions of members who buy into the program to get misc discounts and have no idea (or actually despise) the political arm of the AARP, and every doc that I've talked to thinks the healthcare bill sucks, except for the AMA's 18%, none of who I have actually met.

Dink is never going to take the time to actually talk to doctors or the health care professionals who actually work in the field or know a little bit about what's wrong with the current system. He was given an "endorsement" that fits neatly within his political view point and that's good enough for him.
