Any one work using CAD?

Just curious who all if anyone uses CAD. Post up what software you use and what you design at your current job.

I've been using Solidworks for a little over 3 years now and 2d AutoCAD for 4 or so. That is mainly the 2 I use but I have a little experience with Pro-E as well.

We design golf ball molds and other machinery for golf ball production. We also do a little aerospace tooling design.

I currently live in Middle Georgia but am looking to move to the Tampa/Sarasota area. So if any one knows of any jobs or places I should look let me know.

I have been doing 3D AutoCAD for almost 10 years now. I just hired on (a year ago) at a mower company and use Autodesk Inventor

Inventor is really cool. I took an engineering class back in high school and 2D AutoCAD and AutoDesk Inventor were the apps we used. Cant remember much now though.

I use 20-20 Technologies CAD Design, and CAD Virtual Showroom. Mainly used for kitchens, dining areas, and mudrooms - at least within our company. I left Sarasota in 2006 and at that time, none of the major design firms there were even toying w/ the idea of 20-20 CAD. Its a pretty prominent software within the interior design field, so I'm not sure WTH was going on back in Sarasota. Every single firm here in Seattle were actively using it when I started job searching.

I dont imagine you're thinking about going into interior design though, so I'm probably not the person to start recommending companies or jobs. Good luck in your move, however.

i do commercial and residential structural design work and have been working with autodesk autocad for about 5 years now. i just do 2d work because no one wants to pay for a 3d layout. we have everything up to 2010, but i usually use 06 unless i have to use 2010.

I learned CAD in college (was required to Engineering Majors which I was at first). Forgot the program (wasn't any of the big ones), never used it since then.

Not an engineer. I was an Aeronautical Engineering major at first in college. I moved into Computer Science. And I work on financial systems.

I'm a Mechanical Eng. Our first year included a class using AutoCAD, it wasn't so much, learning the software as it was learning how to represent 3-D objects in a 2-D workspace and redrawing odd-shaped objects at various arbitrary angles.

3rd year included a 3-D cad program that ran on an older version of Xfce Linux. I can't remember the program, but it was several years behind what we expect from solidworks and ProE. It had features such as extrude, cut, revolve, pattern, connecting elements. It had finite-element meshing for strain testing. Anyway, it was a required class.

The last year, I took an optional class in Pro-E. Pretty much covered Pro-E from the ground up, lots of good stuff in producing patterned parts, lots of connections options, and even animating the connected parts.

At work, I prefer Pro-E, since I create a lot of patterned items, but I almost always copy the finished product over to Solidworks in order to use their 2-D drawing program, since I almost always have to send the drawing off to a machine shop.

IS there much difference between PRO-E and Solidworks? I know Inventor and Solidworks are close to the same as far as operations go.

Older Pro-e was a lot more "manual" compared to Solidworks. It seemed to take more clicks of the mouse then it would to do the same thing in Solidworks. We've got Pro-e Wildfire 5.0 now and it seems to be a lot more user friendly like Solidworks. From my experience I've found Pro-e to work better with complex surfaces (satellites surfaces) but prefer to use Solidworks with everything else.

But for the most part there is NO a huge difference between the two. Mostly just different clicks.

Damn, I didn't know we were up to wildfire 5. I've got wildfire 2.0.

I only draw in solidworks for simple stuff, stuff I don't want to draw in ProE and then port over to the solidworks drawing program (in order to put it on paper). I think Solidworks has much nicer software for making a machine shop print.

I agree, I think ProE can do more drawing stuff in a lot fewer clicks, and it's all laid out nicer. I can find what I need in ProE, with Solidworks, it's all hidden away in some menu because they didn't have enough room to put it into the workspace.

I like that ProE automatically puts in a dimension value when you draw an object, and when I hit escape or undo, it doesn't cancel out the entire command.

We were previously on 2.0. There is a big change to 5.0. A lot of things moved and I couldn't find stuff. But then again I 'm a total noob with Pro-e. If I stay here at my current job they are going to send me to Pro-E training. But I'm getting under paid, that's why I'm looking to find a new job.

Pro-E training would be worth it, I actually really liked the lass I took in college. Since I already knew Solidworks, I got the first 10 assignments done in the first 2 days, but afterwords I learned a lot of new stuff, and it familiarized myself with all the buttons and functions. I'll check out 5.0. how do you like it so far?
