Welfare is not the root cause, though. The cause is no different from the childhood "Daddy, I want a puppy" ideal. Too many young people still think that having a REAL baby is no different from having a pet or having a baby DOLL. They think it'll be fun and satisfying to raise a child (or several children). For some people, it's about all they can do.
With our economy in the trash, a lot of people simply have nothing better to do. Out of work? I guess the only way to feel adequate is to create and nurse life, and it works. It's a distraction from whatever mess that person's life has become. |

Of course, if all those comforting distractions were to be pulled quickly, we'd have chaos. Real change has to happen slowly, which is why I was pissed that Ford didn't win the St. Pete mayor's race yesterday. She wanted to give a middle finger to the Devil Rays. It would have meant one less distraction in our community. |

Any nay sayers currently raising three children on their own? I have one child, and without getting into specifics, what I pay for her alone would put the majority of posters in this thread in the "poor house". Then again, a welfare child most likely does not live as well as mine does. But to point out as Joe has, most on welfare do not know or want to do better for themselves or family. Don't mess with the ninja master of lowlife tax preparation. Child Tax Credits go on line 51 of a Form 1040. Earned Income Credits go on line 64a of Form 1040. The former is $1,000 apiece and will only reduce your tax liability to zero, the latter follows the EIC table and is adjusted by your earned income (line 7 of Form 1040); it can be refunded even if you did not have an AGI high enough to necessitate filing.
