A Quebec woman’s health benefits have been suspended after she posted photos of herself smiling on Facebook.

Nathalie Blanchard has been on leave for the last year from her job at IBM in Bromont, Quebec. She has been receiving monthly sick leave benefits from Manulife due to depression.

Now those payments have come to an end after an agent with Manulife informed Blanchard that she appears to be having fun in several Facebook photos, such as at a local bar, on her birthday and vacationing in a sunny destination. Manulife says the photos are evidence that she is no longer depressed.

According to CBC News, Blanchard has hired a lawyer to try and get her benefits reinstated.

Manulife says a client’s policy would not be terminated solely based on photos found on a website, but for now, they are suspended indefinitely.

Facebook tip: Adjust your privacy settings to show only a limited profile to those not on your list.

Dumb bitch, next time you're lucky enough to be getting monthly sick leave payments for an illness as broad as depression don't be a dumb fuck and post pics all over facebook about you having fun on the companies dime. Dummy.

+1 I think the fact that she was getting paid for it was the kicker. Had she just been on a non-paid sick day it probably would've been another story, but she was getting paid.

Wow that's a bit ridiculous. I've had jobs where they ask for a doctors note, but stopping by your place is a bit extreme. A large company like Verizon I'd imagine a lot of people abuse sick days. Sick days are for just that, you're too sick to come to work. You can't say "if I take a paid sick day I should be able to do whatever and it's my business". The company is paying you for the time as a courtesy, so if you want to spit in there face by abusing that courtesy I don't see why they wouldn't have every right to take that away.

Not every dept. has the ability to do this and not every manager has the time. If you are the type to take advantage of the system and are doing things that you shouldn't because you probably won't be caught..... like taking a company vehicle to your second job and getting paid by both companies for the same time, then yes they will put you under a microscope and hold you to every detail. For the regular everyday employee they are not going to waste their time. Sick time is a benefit of the job, like paid vacation, so using it isn't going to cause an issue (even if your not sick). Besides depending on your job you may be too "sick" to work but well enough go other places. For example, if you work in the call center and you get a bad ear infection causing hearing loss for a few days..... you can't work but you are well enough to go shopping. Say you ate some bad food and you work outside where you can't make it to a toilet in an instant......you can't work but you can go to your girlfriends place and watch movies.

There are other companies that will call you at home to make sure you are there or some that want a doctors note, those that actually enforce this have had a lot of abuse in the past.




In this woman's case all she has to do is produce a medical description of depression and she is back on the payroll. It's not always a 24/7, curled into a ball, crying on the floor illness (although it can be). Someone can go a few days normal and a week to months down. The down could be a couch/bed confining episode or a general apathy to anything with easy stress triggers to a lower feeling. She could simply have posted the few times in the last weeks that she has been happy enough to smile. She just didn't want to post the other pics of her doing nothing but eating and sleeping.

Not saying she is or isn't really sick, but pics of a smile amount to nothing.

Fuck that shit...if I'm too sick to work, I'm sure as hell not answering the fucking door. I never answer the door, anyway, unless I know the person. Solicitors get to stand there and ring the bell a few times while I stand on the other side of the door and snicker at them.

There's no law that says you have to answer your door if someone rings the bell or knocks, so fuck them.

Understood but the thing is. Getting extended medical leave (without pay) and being allowed to come back to your job is a perk in and of itself. Had this been the case i can understand. But she was BEING PAID. There's a difference. It doesn't sound like this was something of a 401K type of situation either where she paid into it so it's her money. This was a perk/benefit like Paid vacation. The company can say pretty much that if they're well enough to be partying then they're well enough to put in at least a day or two of work since they're still paying you.

I understand that the nature of depression isn't such a cut and dry illness. I also understand that if you're seeing professional help in the form of a psychiatrist then they may even suggest you go out and enjoy yourself BUT the thing is it's still on the company dime, so you have to tread very lightly. It doesn't even look like they were probing her that closely. SHE put her business out on a public forum and in the end got fucked. even if she's still depressed she should have been more responsible. People are lucky to have jobs these days. This bitch is getting paid to be sad at home(I know depression is more than that so nobody get defensive) and she has the time the bullshit around and make facebook updates. Fuck her.

I dunno what the law is in Canada but if her company wanted to be real fucked up they could've gave some BS about how her illness was affecting her work ethic and fired her, then she wouldn't have shit. Some people don't think about these things.
