    Cheapest Grass Seed

I have a Bahia lawn and i'm looking to do some overseeding, I was curious if there are places other than home depot or lowes that may have grass seed in higher quantity for a lesser price, purchasing enough for about 16000 sqft from home depot would be around $240 for light overseeding and $480 for regular/high overseeding which i'd like to do. Any ideas?

open the phone book or yellowpages online. There is a a place here outside of DC that sells seed. Cheapest would be Brown Top Millet or Rye IMO, but im not sure. It will grow fast to fill in the bare spots and you can re-seed over it with Bahia as you see fit. I think its about $50 for a 50 or 100lb bag. cant remember the bag size. Here ya go

check out local farm stores...the last time I bought Argentine Bahia seed it was $144 a 50lb bag (about 2-3 months ago). That was up here in St.Augustine, but no doubt there's a farm store around Tampa somewhere. Seed it at 25 lbs an acre, up to 40lbs an acre max...anything above 40lbs. is a waste of money.

actually Argentine Bahia is one of the best things that you could use....it's extremely drought tolerant, and really doesn't need much fertilizer or anything....Pensacola Bahia is good as well if you don't mind some die-back during freezes, but it doesn't tolerate wet areas as well as Argentine if that affects you any.

In designing a yard or landscape for FL one of the best things you can do is plant drought tolerent grass and plantings. Water conservation is a pretty big deal nowadays, and also bahai is a FL native and can thrive with little to no care whatsoever. BTW: Bahai stripes the best as well when it comes to southern grasses Ill have to get a pic of my yard up.

I went from having St Augustine to Bahia and the Bahia is much easier to take care of, with overseeding you can make a bahia lawn look very similar to a St augustine lawn.

Interesting topic that I don't know much about. My Bahia lawn looks like most probably, sparse in some areas and tends to grow the tall seed stocks very quickly. I have a seed spreader that I can hook to one of the mowers, maybe I will look into dumping some extra this season.

bahai will never give you a "carpet" like st augustine per se', but overseed it and cut it high (i do 4" but it requires cutting every week) and it will LOOK like a carpet of grass

+1 i just re-sodded my whole front yard with Argentine Bahia and it took off really quick. The sod was kinda brown when we laid it down and within 2 weeks had a full green yard. The only gripe i have about it is the fact that it grows about twice as fast as St Augustine. Its drout tolerant, tolerant to high traffic areas, and will make it through the winters without turning brown most of the time.

..until the first frost. Once it frosts out it goes dormant. But in October you should sling out some Rye grass and you'll have the greenest yard all winter guaranteed. When spring comes back the rye will die off and ur back to the other yard. Green grass, like REALLY green grass, in FL during the winter is neat to see IMO.

Do you guys have problems with weeds in your bahia? That's the only down side to bahia that I have, it gets FULL of weeds.

How often are you guys overseeding?
Don't blame me, I didn't vote for either of those motherf*ckers.

no i dont. it also might be from the fact that we used a sod cutter to remove the st augustine grass and removed 3" of dirt to make sure it was a good surface to drop new sod. I havent sprayed for weeds but i have for bugs and have not run into a single issue. We just laid the bahaia sod the 1st week of april.
