Never had a lawn before

So I'm completely new to this whole "lawn" thing. I've lived in a townhouse for the last twelve years. I decided to take care of mowing and trimming myself, but I thought that I would leave the fertilization, pest control, and weeds to the professionals of TruGreen ($34 a month). They said that they will leave tips in our mailbox with water instructions, etc after their visit too. Since I have no idea what to do, I thought that it was a good idea.

My wife's boss gave us a lawn mower and I picked up a string trimmer from Lowes. What other lawn care equipment do I need? I don't have a lot of grass, but I do have quite a few plants and hedges around the house.

Thanks in advance!

If you have St augustine I would get a metal bladed edger. See if they make the attachemnt for your string trimmer. Trying to edge with a string trimmer sucks.

I would also check your sprinklers every few weeks to make sure all the zones work. I lose a zone every year and dont notice until the lawn is already brown.

Thanks!

I have St. Augustine in the front and Bahia in the back. I was told by the builder that they do this because Hillsborough County will not allow them to put irrigation in the back yard past a certain point? The front has full irrigation.

I didn't want to start an entire new thread for this but do you know what really sucks about having your own lawn that you try to take care of and keep looking nice? People throwing trash in it. That crap makes me so mad. We worked pretty hard on our yard this past Sunday. Then when I get home yesterday, I see that someone has thrown a drink in our yard. I wish there was some type of force-field that you could put around your lawn that would throw things back at people.
