Before this turns into a "I only listen to underground hip hop because hip hop is dead" thread. If we go on overall popularity, album sales and longevity in the rap industry then it would be a close call between LL Cool J and Jay-Z. Both artist have been in the game 15+ years and have stayed at the top of the charts with hits and both are still just as popular now as they were a decade ago.

Not really. They both kinda suck. Everything is generic nowadays. Its all been done. Its a rarity that an artist actually comes out with something interesting wth a hint of originality to it. In the case of rap and hip hop, where their fans are a bunch of morons who are happy as long as they can jump around like monkeys, its worse than many of the other genres. A lot of these 'artists' doing rap and hip hop have no talent at all; all they have is MTV whoring them around and commanding their loyal idiots - err - fans, to love them.
